gbh.NEW_.TrumpChalk.3.30.16.036The national epidemic of college students being triggered by pro-Donald Trump chalk messages has continued anew, with students at the University of Michigan calling the police to complain after chalkings popped up there as well.

According to The Michigan Daily, messages reading “#stop Islam” and “Trump 2016” were found on campus Wednesday. “The statements, which were largely washed off by Thursday, prompted students to call University police…” they report.

“This is so reflective of our student campus and the depths of racism and the things that students of color have to endure and that the administration is continuously silent on,” Michigan student Banen Al-Sheemary told the Daily.

Al-Sheemary lamented that the university’s Division of Public Safety and Security had not responded to the chalkings. “I’ve been getting bounced around from one person to another, and I understand it’s after hours, but there should be some kind of emergency number besides the police because a lot of students of color don’t feel comfortable calling the police.”

In the end, the students just washed them off themselves. “It’s irresponsible of the administration that we are actually out here with buckets of water and napkins to clean off these hateful messages and the administration isn’t taking care of it,” Al-Sheemary said. “…That perpetuates these really racist and hateful stereotypes that turn into violence and turn into students of color feeling unsafe on campus.”

In response to the controversy, Michigan’s administration issued the following statement:

Earlier today someone used chalk to write a #stopislam message on the main square in the heart of our campus known as the Diag. Attacks directed toward any member or group within the University of Michigan community, based on a belief or characteristic, are inconsistent with our values of respect, civility and equality. We all understand that where speech is free it will sometimes wound. But our message is this: We are fully committed to fostering an environment that is welcoming and inclusive of everyone. Tonight we are reminded there is much work yet to be done.

I saw this story. So far as I've seen, there are no big student protests about it. So it's a small group who decided to make a fuss.

Doesn't really qualify as an indicator of any larger concern of any kind, or of any "deterioration of America."

its quite ambiguous as well

a chalking of 'trump2016', which is promotion for a presidential candidate

is a far cry from

'downwithislam' , which is clear religious bigotry and to be dealt with the same as a chalking of 'downwithchristianity' would be

its one thing to say it or feel it, another to post it in an areas where people of those religions are paying to attend

In the hyper sensitive society we live in today people are conflating what they feel is offensive with threatening, hurtful and/or hateful.

It's especially prevalent on college campuses where too many young adults are acting like children who run to their parents crying every time they don't get their way. The problem is as much the parents who raised these kids to think they will always get their way instead of preparing them for the real world.

Bill Maher, who I seldom agree with, blasted the kids at Emery for feeling threatened by "Trump 2016" written in chalk and how wimpy the kids are on college campuses today. Even our last Michigan governor, Jennifer Granholm, said on the same show that it's ridiculous what students are feeling threatened by today.

Yeah, the thing is, college campuses have ALWAYS been that way.

Even back in the moldy oldy days of the Renaissance and before then as well.

You set up a situation where people who are barely out of their parents immediate care, who think they are already grownups, and who are being told they are becoming more educated than everyone else, and they WILL end up protesting silly stuff, making grand statements about all sorts of things they really don't understand yet, and so on, not to mention partying like there's no tomorrow.

My point is, this is nothing new. So forget about the equally ancient and endlessly repeated fuddy duddy old fart proclamation that "the kids today are wimps! Or worse!" , and wake up a little more.

If you need proof of how OLD you sound, google up some of the ancient Roman graffiti from before the fourth century. Even there, you'll find old codgers whining about how the youth of today can't hold a candle to the wonderful brave kids that the writers imagine THEY were, back in the late THIRD century.

Hilarious. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

LOL When I was child and I cried about something silly my parents didn't in any way condone my behavior. As a young adult I NEVER thought mere WORDS were a threat to my physical well being. If college kids did the same thing when I was going to school they would have been ridiculed by their peers for such childish behavior.

Comparing the way these kids are acting at sight of words to the way kids did in the not so distance is absurd at best.

"The pen is mightier than the sword" is a metonymic adage indicating that communication, or in some interpretations, administrative power or advocacy of an independent press, is a more effective tool than direct violence.

The sentence (if not the idea, which had been expressed in various earlier forms) was coined by English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839 for his play Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy.

For goodness sake. This is about ONE incident at ONE University, and the complaint wasn't even made by a majority of the students.

Enough with the crowing.

You should address that "enough with the crowing" line to the UM admin. Per the OP...

"" In response to the controversy, Michigan’s
administration issued the following statement:

#stopislam message on the main square in the
heart of our campus known as the Diag.
Attacks directed toward any member or group

This incident that youre trying to sweep under the rug was addressed by frickin university admin as they molly coddled these lil bltches even more.
Maybe their correct response to the "students" shoulda been...."Stfu and get back to class"
