Nearly 100 killed by lightning strikes in India in 2 days (VIDEO)

Almost 100 people have been killed and dozens more injured in a series of lightning strike incidents in India this week as a monsoon lashed the southern coast. Multiple flashes continue illuminating the sky, as crowds are mourning the victims.

At least 93 people have died and 20 more received injuries in the past few days as lightning strikes along with heavy rains and violent thunderstorms swept through Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Most of the victims were farm workers, Indian authorities said.

Just last night lightning left at least 56 people dead in the eastern state of Bihar.

“Many of the victims are children and women,” Anirudh Kumar, a senior official at Bihar's disaster management agency, told AFP news agency on Wednesday.

A distressing video obtained by Ruptly on Wednesday shows overcrowded hospitals and dozens of people grieving the dead in the Sasaram city in Bihar.

“When it was raining, we immediately took shelter. It [lightning] hit us there, and then we fell unconscious,” a man who was taken to a hospital said.

“We could not understand what had happened. Then in the middle, when I regained consciousness, I realized that I had been hit by something.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “deeply anguished” by the incident.

My thoughts & prayers are with those who lost their near & dear ones due to the lightning. May the injured recover quickly: PM @narendramodi

Monsoons are common in India in the seasonal months of June to October and some 2,000 people end up victims to lightning strikes each year. In 2014, over 2,500 people were killed by sky discharges in India according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

The world's new lightning capital sees more than 100,000 flashes a year

In one year, there are more than 100,000 lightning flashes over the lake, says Rachel Albrect, the lead on a team of researchers collecting data about lightning strikes in the area. They recently released their findings in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

"It's so often that the state of Zulia in Venezuela, where this lake is, has a lightning bolt on its flag," she says.

The previous lightning capital was located in Africa's Congo Basin, specifically near the town of Kamembe, Rwanda. There are six major sites in Africa that have similar geography and are also active lightning hotspots

Maracaibo may have come in at number one, but here are the top ten lightning hotspots in the world:

1. Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela

2. Kabare, Democratic Republic of Congo

3. Kampene, DRC

4. Caceres, Colombia

5. Sake, DRC

6. Dagar, Pakistan

7. El Tarra, Colombia

8. Nguti, Cameroon

9. Butembo, DRC

10. Boende, DRC

Are lightning deaths increasing?

Lightning appears to be killing and injuring increasing numbers of people in developing countries, meteorologists and experts say.

In Brazil lightning strikes are increasing - and so are the casualties

The total casualties could even be higher than other weather-related disasters like floods, landslides and droughts.

"The frequency of lightning has somehow increased from what it used to be," says Michael Nkalubo, commissioner at Meteorological Department of Uganda, a country where lightning storms are common.

not sure who's saying that, but there's lots of flooding going on all over the world for thunderstorms haven't increased... flooded 3 times here this year, 2 of them "biblical"... and still flooding in Dallas

The meteorologist said if.
He did not say, thunderstorms increased. He is talking about lighting increasing.

The quote:

He is saying DEATH from lighting COULD be even higher than (individual) events.
He is not minimizing other events or saying there are less of them in comparison.

But yes, I think flooding & quakes & all natural disasters are increasing.

i agree... i was reading about about how our solar system is moving into a region of space that is hotter than the region we are leaving... it makes sense, because they are noticing odd "weather" on all the planets, not just ours...
