I don't know about deep and thoughtful subjects. I like subjects for deep and thoughtful discussions myself.

There was a famous Hollywood director, who, when he died had a funeral that was absolutely packed. "I don't get it" said an attending studio boss, "everybody hated this guy." "Give the people what they want, and they will turn out every time" said the wiser boss next to him. So you can give the people sophisticated subjects but the box office is going to reveal what they really want. Smut :-)
