well you could try it... i am assuming you see how to change to classic view in the same window no? at what stage is it not working? oh well looks like there may be an easier way found... that was fun

Helpful info to post:

Operating system!

I'm rather guessing you have Windows XP, and it's in "XP" mode not "classic" so when you click start, you get the 6(?) most recently used programs on the left hand side, and My Computer etc on the right hand side.

Even if you put it into "classic" mode you can put stuff above but not into the special groupings Microsoft makes for you.

Personally I have a Quick Launch bar next to my start button, which is where I launch most stuff from. You'll need to right click on the task bar (to the right of the start button, not on a program that's running) and I think it's View or Show or something -> Quick Launch (sorry, I'm on a Mac at the moment :P).

Then, you can open up an explorer window (right click on "start -> explore is my favourite method) and navigate down to "Program Files". Right click and drag it down to the quick launch bar (which will have Show Desktop, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, maybe Media Player, in if you've not changed anything) and when it looks like a shortcut, let go!

You might need to right click on the task bar and unlock it, resize the quicklaunch bar, and relock it if there's no room...

Probably no help, but umm it helps my typing speed, right?

I think you're talking about something else - like, office quick launch crap which loads on startup. I mean the block of icons that's usually, when enabled, just to the right of your start button...

The stuff in XP normal mode on the right hand side is fixed, AFAIK, I'm afraid... probably some registry hacks could change it, but.. meh.

That's why I like Linux. The high configurablely will let you do just about anything. You can make a link or shortcut, and put it anywhere you want. Drag the corner of an icon and change the size. Just imagine it, and it can be.

Yeah I have always thought about getting into linux but I'm hooked on how pretty windows can be. It's all about pretty to us girls. LOL

Speaking of pretty, I don't put shortcuts on the desktop. I have my basic things and a folder for text documents since I make a bazillion a day. :)

There is actually a way to do what you're talking about...I discovered it on accident but haven't been able to replicate it.

It happened while I was screwing around and making my Start Menu say something other than Start at the bottom left.

It's a common hack that you can google, but how to actually put Programs with My Documents and stuff I don't remember, it was a regedit command I goofed up.

Like I said, If it is all about pretty, then you never have seen a real linux GUI like gnome. My Linux Unbuntu 7.04 running beryl, even makes Windows Vista Aero look sick.

Here is a link that you can check out some comparing of the two OSs.

Truth be told, I don't remember exactly how to do it.

But for anyone willing to research it, I can give you a bit of a head start by narrowing it down. In registry editor, it was in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL

BUt I don't remember where it was after that.
