NYC terror attack suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, entered US through Diversity Visa Program
The alleged ISIS fanatic authorities say was behind Tuesday’s deadly New York City slaughter came to the United States seven years ago from Uzbekistan under the Diversity Visa Program, details of Sayfullo Saipov’s travel to America that could become all the more important as President Trump proposes revisions to his “extreme vetting” program. The Diversity Visa Program, a State Department program which offers a lottery for people from countries with few immigrants in America, drew the ire of Trump early Wednesday morning. "The terrorist came into our country through what is called the 'Diversity Visa Lottery Program,' a Chuck Schumer beauty. I want merit based," Trump tweeted. "We are fighting hard for Merit Based immigration, no more Democrat Lottery Systems. We must get MUCH tougher (and smarter)." The DV program makes up to 50,000 immigrant visas available annually, "drawn from random selection among all entries to individuals who are from countries with low rates of immigration" to the U.S., according to the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services website. Applicants must prove they have a clean criminal record, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, or have at least two years of work experience within the past five years in order to qualify. The program originated as part of a bill introduced in 1990 by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., then a member of the House. Schumer’s measure to make a set number of visas available to “diversity immigrants” from certain countries was absorbed into a larger House immigration bill, which was sponsored by Schumer and 31 others, including several Republicans. Saipov is accused of killing eight people and injuring 11 others when he drove a rented Home Depot truck down a New York City bike lane, plowing into pedestrians, before slamming into a school bus. |

interesting one participant in a program 30 years old and we should ditch the program
dozens of mass shootings by Americans, but we should not ditch guns or Americans thousands of deaths by DUI, but we should not ditch bars and alcohol tragedy starts with the mindset of the individual who decides to kill, not the programs that may be trying to help others that they may have participated in... |

Knowing the requirements I wonder just how hard it would be for members of ISIS to have their participants meet those requirements gain access and become a sleeper cell..One would suspect it would be best to discontinue the program for the mean time as a precautionary measure towards protecting the citizens. What can you say since the beginning of time probably, there are always a few or the one that screws it up for everyone else..welcome to the world But I don't seriously think not doing anything should be compared to other things that are wrong as well..as far as I see each one is a problem unto itself and should be dealt with individually and accordingly.. |

the program already has a two year vetting process
hard to know what someone will do in the decade AFTER they enter the program, no matter how well they are vetted but considering this is one out of hundreds of thousands who entered this way, Id say its working as planned and is just an easy scapegoat or headline ... the issue is more about the internet access terrorist groups have than it is nationality or anything else as long as weak minded people can be swayed by the things on the internet that hate groups use for recruitment, it doesn't matter where they lived or where they move to ... we wont catch them all , this is not minority report where we can predict future motivations and actions best we have is what we do by vetting their CURRENT history, |

how long would be long enough? and what happens when the US needs help from any of those countries which they have then shut out? its a big world, the US is not self contained, as much as we like to think it is. We need to borrow money sometimes. Sometimes we need help with natural disasters. Sometimes we need allies in global issues. if we close our doors to their citizens traveling, why should they help us? |

how long would be long enough? and what happens when the US needs help from any of those countries which they have then shut out? Yep other countries have laws too. Why shouldn't we? Btw those other countries still get help from us. Why should tightening up immigrantion hurt us? Others would be hurt too |

If they (we) do what is good for our country it is what countries do. If other countries (that don't have the same issue) closes borders, why can't we? Other countries shouldn't dictate what they don't experience |
