Former President Barack Obama reported for jury duty Wednesday morning at the Daley Center downtown, but was in the courthouse less than two hours before he was allowed to go home.

Obama worked the jury room, greeting and thanking other citizens for their jury service. At one point he looked over the room and said, "This looks like Chicago!"

Obama spent the night at his home in Kenwood before leaving for jury duty shortly after 9:30 a.m., in a motorcade of four black SUVs, a marked Chicago police SUV, and a marked Illinois State Police SUV.

After navigating through stop-and-go traffic in the Loop, he arrived at the Daley Center courthouse around 10 a.m., and entered the building through the basement.

Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans greeted the former president when he arrived in the jury assembly room on the 17th floor of the courthouse. Shortly before noon, Evans announced Obama had been dismissed for the day. The former president had been selected for a jury panel that was not needed on Wednesday, and the entire panel was allowed to go home around lunchtime.

Evans said several other potential jurors shook hands with Obama while he was at the courthouse, and some even brought along books for him to sign.

As much as I don't like him, it still would be cool to be on a jury with him

It was cool for him because he will never actually have to serve on a jury. so its a hand shaking exercise.

I have been called 8 times and got out of it 3 times, with a few letters and a B.S. story. The other 5 I sat in that friggin room for hours and hours watching the "wheel of fortune" marathon on t.v.

I got called on one case. sat in the jury box.. the double doors opened, they lead in the defendant who had no hair and lightning bolts tattooed on his head

I sat there and said to myself....guilty.

I got thrown off that jury because the defense attorney must have read my face.

that was it.. 5 times.. one case.

A jury of your peers?... noT always

Question: My Daugther had to do Jury Duty does he get paid the same amount as the others. On top of that, her boss didn't pay her for the day and every day that she had to attend because she was not at work it was not considered a sick pay or leave of absence. It could not be used for Holliday pay either or vacation pay.

Juror Pay
Petit Jury

Federal jurors are paid $40 a day. While the majority of jury trials last less than a week, jurors can receive up to $50 a day after serving 10 days on a trial. (Employees of the federal government are paid their regular salary in lieu of this fee.) Jurors also are reimbursed for reasonable transportation expenses and parking fees. Jurors also receive a subsistence allowance covering their meals and lodging if they are required to stay overnight.

Your employer may continue your salary during all or part of your jury service, (but federal law does not require an employer to do so). Nonetheless, the Jury Act forbids any employer from firing, intimidating, or coercing any permanent employee because of their federal jury service. You should check whether your company or employer has a policy for employees serving on jury duty.

I've been called for jury duty 3 times. I was never picked to be a juror in a trial. The first 2 times, I had to be there 8:15 am even though things didn't start till 9. Had to sit all day. Groups get called into the courtroom and in the jury box asked all kinds of questions by the lawyers and judge, which is terrible for me. I don't like being the center of attention with strangers. I guess they didn't like my answers. The last time was about 6 months ago. The case settled out of court, so I didn't have to show up.

Jurors get paid ****. Every employer that I know of, pays their employees regular wages when they are called for jury duty.. but I am sure many don't.
They don't like it.. but they pay.

If your employer does not pay and you are living payday to payday it is a big hit.

That's all you had to say???? lol

When I got called in, it was a case of the Mohawks blocking the bridge because of some plan to build a golf course on their land, someone got killed, army got sent in, it was a huge thing.

I told the judge I was pizzed I had to travel extra 2hrs... rejected!

Today, I think I'd actually try to get selected for it...

THEN fry the bastid! smokin

it was something to do with a plane crash, i told the judge that every vet coming home from the middle east isn't getting paid, so why should someone that got hurt on a leisure trip get money... they said go home and gave me a 6 dollar check..

Obama worked the jury room...At one point he looked over the room and said, "This looks like Chicago!"

OMG!
Was there a mass shooting at a courthouse?!
I missed that in the news.

As much as I don't like him, it still would be cool to be on a jury with him

And I'm sure there would be no appeal to mistrial based on undue influence of the jury or disturbance.

very true... i got out last time by telling them i didn't believe in money for pain and suffering

When I lived in Phoenix I was called in for jury duty 3 times.
I never made it past the waiting room.
The only people ever chosen were hispanic.

Then I moved out of state and over the next 2 years I received a couple more jury duty summons, even after I followed the procedure to prove I lived out of state.

IMO kind of funny is in college I didn't have any money to go to the movies, so I'd walk down to the courthouse and spectate some of the trials and proceedings.

It doesn't matter what your job is or how much you make. You are compensated for being a juror. It's pretty much standard. Just like if your called to be a witness you get paid a witness fee which out here is between $25.00 and $50.00. Plus if say you were a witness and you were out of town when you saw the crime they will pay your witness fee, mileage, hotel room and meal compensation.

jury duty is a civic responsibility.
