Unions were once a good thing for the common worker even tho the mob bosses were the biggest winners. Over the years greed, their lobbying power and political influence/bias towards support for the corrupt Dem chambers of congress, has changed their agenda..... and influence on the economy thru pressures applied.

They have also failed to represent "all" members political leanings, forced dues even on non members without union benefits wishing to remain employed or even work at all, and forced hardships on businesses not adhering to their will by strikes and forced walk-outs.

100 years of power finally broken by SCOTUS! drinker

The Dems are NOT happy to say the least bigsmile

What's your opinion? Please correct me if you think otherwise, but to remain a working body they must return to their basic principals while taking a large financial hit to Dem political power brokers

unions pfft.

to hell with Unions, The union are parasites on decent society and market econmomy.

The days when the industrial revolution began and things were new, pushing workers beyond their limits was an instrumental reason why Unions were needed.

But after FDR labour laws ,I think Unions became obsolete.

If you look at what is wrong today particularly in the public sector? UNIONS.

Teachers? UNIONS, you cant fire bad teachers.

Sports and their outrageous salaries ? UNIONS

Private Sector particularly the Auto and manufacturing? UNIONS

Police and Law Enforcement? UNIONS, if a bad cop does something wrong he or she is placed on paid administration duty.

Somebody tell me where the unions are assets to workers?

The mafia used to love unions.

I have built a few factories in the U.S. nd in doing the pre construction due diligence on where build one of the line items is

is it a union state or not

I try to avoid building union states because they totally rape construction costs and they have a caviler ( " tough.. I'm union") attitude on the job site.

I have a run in with the union electricians on a job 15 years ago and t shut down the job for 2 weeks.

I do build in NYC.. Have to, and the way I get around the unions. is that I hire 3 or 4 of them ( 1 from each trade). I tell them to sit there and stay out of the way, and to show their card if a rep comes by. The true fact is, the non union guys run rings around them.. they are much better at their trades.

There are 100's of union buildings in NYC where you have to use all union workers. I will not bid on work in those buildings.

No. I think all privileges and discretion should be only at the terms of the employer.. This is America.

it was sarcasm

I actually do not believe any contract (which employment is) should be one sided. I think all parties should have a reasonable discretion to determine what they seek to get from the deal.

Unions can be good if/when they function to speak up for the discretion of the employees.

Minimum wage should be keeping up with COLA.

They do already, the worker has a choice accept or walk away.

during the industrial revolution and guided age yes, today ? no.

minimum wage isn't supposed to be a living wage, when FDR signed off on it with recommendation from the unions, it was to make sure that White workers were paid higher than black and minority workers who were flocking from the south to the north and taking jobs being paid less because they ( the minorities) believed working a job and working for less pay is better than not working and starving.

its better to earn a little vs earning Nothing and starving to death.

that is why minimum wage existed.

Democrats pffft

well, to each their own (opinion).

sometimes earning something is not better, if it sacrifices things that are priceless, like children or health or sanity.

but thats just me.

Union electrician in NYC $85.00 per hour ( loaded cost) Non union $35.00.. no load.

quality of workmanship.. basically the same.

little hard to justify in the ledger book

if you actually take a look at the loads money goes towards their

education fund
union costs
equipment
steel tip boots
safety courses

yeah... I have to pay for their boots.. and I see their boots.. they are as old as me.. so the money is not going there.

Kind of different in the 1930's

today , not so much with all the generous welfare benefits.

Welfare?

if you're talking about welfare? no I have never been on welfare, or had a reason to be on welfare.

off topic

I tend to keep my dyck in my pants and not screw every woman and get them pregnant and walk away.

Ive learned from an early age that if keep you dyck in your pants, work towards receiving a good education and learn the skills necessary to be compensated well you have a chance of living a good life.

And having a family and providing for them is a bonus, you cant do that on minimum wage working at Starbucks or some retail.

I managed both a non-union shop and a union shop.
In the non-union shop I had free reign to do as needed to keep the trucks running and the costs minimal.
In the union shop everything I did was debated, scrutinized and dictated.
It affected the line and the costs.

When I needed to send a mechanic on a service call off-hours, I called the mechanic that had the expertise and ability to get the job done.
In the union shop, I had to send the mechanic with the most seniority and it didn't matter his level of expertise.

If I needed a mechanic to come in on saturday to finish up a job so the truck could run early monday, I sent the one familiar with the job and paid him the over-time hours he worked.
In the union shop, I had to send the senior mechanic (highest paid) and had to pay him at least 4 hours pay at double time. Even if the job only took an hour.

I set my mechanic's pay according to their abilities. I gave raises on merit, bonuses on merit and other rewards like gas cards, walmart card and dinner certificates.
In the union shop, the pay was fixed. I couldn't give rewards, I couldn't change pay rates without union approval. If I gave one mechanic a gas card, I had to give all a gas card.

Being a mechanic myself I know that there are times when you have to make your own tool to get a job done.
The union put an end to that. The tool had to be purchased from a retailer. If the tool was not available that job remained incomplete until one could be purchased.
I went thru the process of having a homemade tool approved.
They made me get certifications on the welding, certifications on the metalurgy and I had to write up an instruction sheet, safety caution list and place a $ value on the finished tool. Then they made me get the tool covered specifically under the company's insurance BEFORE it could be used.
By the time we finally got the job done and the truck back on the road that tool cost the company 3 times what it should have, but the union was happy.

MY mom was born in 1932. She said welfare back then was a bag of rice that you walked for miles to get. She said you didn't see squirrels like you do today because people were so desperate for food that they were eating them.

Its,sad that welfare today provides a better living than a job.

I have been on and have loved ones who were once on it. Thats my point. I hear from all these people who are CLUELESS going only on what they have heard on one side from others instead of looking at both sides.

How can people on welfare have cell phones? If you havent noticed, landlines have been culturally being REPLACED by cell phones as a means of communication. So cell phones being a part of 'welfare' involves a phone for BASIC communication access. People still have the need to be able to get in touch with family, friends, caretakers, etce, and for potential employers to contact THEM.

How can people on welfare have tablets? Because a basic tablet is MAYBE 50 bucks and they are permitted to have SOME conveniences to be connected to the web, which is also becoming a CULTURAL need to remain connected to and informed of the world around us.

How can people on welfare have other smart devices? same answer.

How can people on welfare drive cars? lets see, because its necessary for access to run errands and transport kids from point A to point B in a timely fashion, because they HAD a car when they hit hard times already and its not sensible to get rid of it, especially if its not paid for completely, and be left with no reliable or efficient means to transport themself or their kids.

I have worked for as little as 8 buck an hour, and still had a vehicle and other devices, its not really a major 'luxury' at all.

It's true. You keep saying so yourself. So make up your mind.

40 hours a week at minimum wage is about $1300 A month. Hell section 8 pays over $1000 a month for rent. Then add $800 foodstamps. $100 wic. $500 cash welfare, Medicaid priceless. Help with heat?.

So a job would have to be about twice minimum wage and include 100% free medical.
