One of our students told us they dont have a refrigerator. Most of the kids in our district dont see any fruit other than what gets served at school lunch:
apple
orange
banana

so they go nuts when they see me with grapes, peach, plum. Some dont know what a plum/peach is. Those things are expensive especially if you've no fridge.

Our kids volunteer at a food bank and see the fruits that go thru there. Usually its bruised and ready to rot. I bet that stuff doesnt get picked to go home with mom and her fridge free home.

Im so grateful I can afford the kind of fruit I like and the fridge to keep it in. Its so foreign to me to not have those things, but when I was younger I lived on a bag of apples, and popcorn for groceries. I didnt even know about food stamps back then. Back then I wasnt thinking of saving up for more apples, or ooo. cheese. I was thinkin, rent, utilities, credit cards, in that order, so if someone offered me a luxury like pudding (calcium btw) I probly woulda used it to self medicate. lol.
Lets be real, if youre depressed do you think salad, or chocolate?

I find people who work or have needed and used the system seem to be much more humane about these things than others who assume what everyone else can or should have. Few people ONLY work, and few people have NO snacks or treats in their home. And many who receive food stamps ARE also working but dont make enough to pay all the other bills and buy food. so I wonder how we would go about marking those who are working and therefore deserve to pick their own diets, from those labeled merely 'parasites' sitting at home who should only have what some taxpayers believe they should have?

Are you saying I haven't worked or needed the system? I did and a 10 year old car disqualified me. I had two kids and 0 income. I took a minimum wage job. My mom who had already had bypass surgery watched my kids. She was almost 40 when I was born. There is a trick to getting welfare.

That's because poverty has turned into going on a cruise, getting nails done, and steak for dinner. Working is ramen noodles to pay taxes.

I think you have done a great job. I bet it was hard too. really.

I wonder what folks with no car got....?

a new car? or a bag of apples, some chicken nuggets, and popcorn?
Did you know for 99c you can either get a cheeseburger or an entire head of kale? which thing will the kids eat? which thing will rot faster in your house? ...and i bet you haz a fridge.

Would they get babysitting from someone they trust?

From what I've seen, they didn't have to buy gas or pay insurance. There money went to the bar and hotel after to get pregnant again. The one girl whose grandma cosigned never made the 1st payment on the car. She let it get repoed. A guy at work offered to pick her up. She said no, he leaves to early for work.

I think there is a part of you that knows thats just not true.

I needed help paying a utility once so I took a day off work (I had the luxury of 3 paid days off btw) to wait all day in a community action service office.

As I sat there, I enjoyed the ac, the free magazine, (<--singular haha) and the free stories of the people I was waiting with. One woman was there w/o her kids because luckily they were at school. When they were not at school, they all lived in a tent at a nearby 'park.' She was crying because she was late for the previous days meeting and worried that she wouldnt get help because of it. Her ride had fallen through. She had no car. I was scared of her a little cuz she seemed so desperate.
There were elderly people there, too, and needed help getting up to have their meeting, there was a young father there, and he had just gotten a free turkey (it was thanksgiving) but didnt know how to cook it, so other folks were chiming in trina help him with advice on that. He had 3 days off work. It looked like he had just come from there, since he was quite dusty looking. There was also a seemingly scared young black man there listening closely to the turkey directions and asking some questions. Maybe he got one too, I dunno.
Anyhoo, I got my utility assistance, but they didnt know when it would arrive: usually 3 months, even tho I had a shutoff notice.
I'll never forget those people tho. None of them had painted nails, or a cruise story. If they had a steak, I'd say they deserved it and I wish I coulda paid for it for them.

I know the things I say to be factual. Ask my h. My sister in law who can't keep a car to drive to take her kids to the Dr was buying a couple 4 wheeler. Yes she has been on 3 cruises. Doesn't have a pot to piss in or a car to drive. She spread her legs was her only accomplishment in life. I actually feel bad for April. She lived in a tent for a while as a child. The govt had been taking good care of her dad who left her to starve. He is in the local nursing home.

news doesn't follow a narrative.
(well, maybe at places like fox 'news' it does.)

honestly, i feel like many trump voters were simply duped.
sure, there are plenty that follow him because of his racist and sexist overtones and his 'their fault not ours' overtones, but generally i think many were coerced and misled down a partisan path, and trump simply saw a tree ripe for his exploitation.

i, for one, have long believed that both parties are wounded, if not utterly corrupt. that's what power does, and that's what power seekers seek.
that's why we, as americans, have a duty to be better educated about our system so as not to be hornswaggled by the carpetbaggers.

it's up to US to open our eyes, educate our minds, and stay abreast of the day's events so that WE, THE PEOPLE, guard our precious freedoms...lest they be lost to those that would abuse them, and us.

now you know how others feel about Obama the rest of his liberal ilk

i love how people have been conditioned to ues the word "liberal" as if it's a dirty word, as if it's a bad thing...and, while at the same time touting what they believe are "conservative values", as if believing in the freedom of men and women, or in liberty for all is a bad thing!

laugh
read your history... historically, Democrats have been none of those things....

times change. ideas change.
look at the republican party. it's undergoing significant changes as we speak.
and, willfully forgetting it's constitutional duties.

Trump isnt talking twenty years ago, he is talking today, when people who need it CAN get it.

they no longer count a vehicle against you, since its less reasonable to expect people to rely solely on public transportation which is not as abundant as it was decades ago.

there is an income guideline based on poverty levels that are considered, with one vehicle permitted per applicant.

as i said, it sounds like you were an appropriate candidate.
ironically, it may be the fault of republicans that you didn't receive it. perhaps it was expected that if you had a car that you had not exhausted all your assets and therefore didn't need the assistance.
and, you were lucky that you had access to free childcare help. many don't.

of course, there may have been other reasons you were denied that we aren't privy to here.

as you needed the system that let you down, i find it interesting that you seem to have no empathy for those that like you did, need assistance.

Nothing has changed. My son was seizing so hard his arms were popping out of place. The army sent him home and canceled his ins. He applied for welfare. He was denied. Told he would have to be a parent or be over 65. I went to work at Honda and met a black man who had inherited a house and quit work for 7 years. He was on food stamps and offered to sell them to me. His pin # is 1965. He had no under age kids and wasn't above 65 years of age. I've seen discrimination

youve seen fraud, as im counting, from about six individuals in your life.

many programs are under the umbrella of welfare. and the requirements are not the same as TWENTY years ago and especially not thirty years ago. a Single male without dependents is probably not going to be able to get cash as their expenses are a bit less than parents or people with children and their time is more their own than those with kids as well. however, there is disaiblity for those who have some physical limitation to traditional income.

It sounds more and more that there is anger and jealousy from some who perceive others as having it 'as good' as them, merely because they see them with something they have either chosen not to have or been denied on certain programs.

i agree.

what i don't understand is the vitriol towards those that want to make it more accesible for those that need and deserve it and the embracing of those that desire only to make it more difficult.
