Newbie here.

Hi everyone. This looks like a fun place to hang out.

In my profile I state that I am not interested in a long distance relationship. Well 95% of my mail is from someone thousands of miles away. LOL I think most of them are scammers, they are everywhere but I think there are still a few good guys out there. We just have to search for them. Call me crazy. LOL

Welcome to the asylum known as mingle.

I wish you the best of luck here.

I'm convinced Many "people " just can't read. slaphead

Well you can set your filters on who can send you mail. It helps to cut down on a lot of junk mail. laugh

Well, I for one, would not write to someone without reading the profile. I'm not putting my interest in someone based on a picture.

Nigeria. those 95% are skinny Nigerians sitting in some sweaty internet café, stained T shirts, dirty pants... smoking a Marlboro and drinking a coke.. ( you can get those anywhere in this world) trying to rip people off on the internet

I know.. I walked those cafes in Morocco. Seen those characters... first hand.

they really suck.. low lives.

There's actually some basic math and common human behavior behind that common online phenomenon.

Since the people who DO read your profile and make a logical judicious decision about it are always more likely to NOT contact you, but the people who simply splash the same message out to everyone they see, without bothering to read profiles, the non-readers will accordingly outnumber the readers.

Imagine a world where there were no holes in the screening of a website like this, and everyone is genuine (never happened in the world of software for many good reasons). Now imagine there are a hundred people in your area who do read profiles, and who only message people who they think will work out, and a hundred who just message everyone who shows up, without looking.

Even with odds that good (fifty-fifty readers versus spammers), you'll get 100 messages from the spammers, and only a tiny few from the thoughtful people who read.

It isn't that the spammers necessarily wildly outnumber the good people, it's that their behavior causes you to be aware of ALL of them, while you will only see a small percentage of the ones who think and read.

How can a made up profile that is a computer construct read a profile? It does not want you, it just wants your money or information.
Welcome to this, whatever it is.

Thanks everyone. You gave me insight into the scammers. I know that they exist everywhere but didn't realize how they did it. Now I know. I will go and set my limits on who can write to me, thanks for the links. I think I am going to enjoy being here.

I do read profiles always have and will - if you don't, then you can make a real fool of yourself.

I've had people from the USA, so they say - I think they are from Africa myself and all Scammers ! so beware & good luck :).

I do read profiles generally after looking at the photos as I'm sure most do.

Lengthy profiles which I've seen few of here I may skim quickly to return later if the person shows any interest.
