As I understand this question, "ex" means last relationship you had. Not last sexual encounter. A relationship that when it ended, no matter how amicably, still broke someone's heart.
So my last ex had died. But if I see someone who is a good look-a-like, I would say hi to the person and say, "you look someone I used to know."
