Topic: who reads the religion posts?

I'm just curious as to why there are these posts...what is the point of trying to debate something that most people, if religious, are practically born with? Can't you just let everyone believe what they want? Is there some cause other than just trying to stir things up that you're trying to accomplish? LOL No matter what you can say, disprove, prove, whatever....we're all going to believe what we want and what we feel is right just as you are. Drop it already. Might as well debate whether being racist is right or wrong....ignorance and intelligence are not easily swayed.

i glance at them, but take a look at some of the ones that were posted a week ago. 15 pages of people fighting about who is right and what religion is "true".

I never read religous posts cause you are so right. People have their own opnions as to how they believe, and I am one of the many. I don't go there cause I do not feel like arguing over what I feel or vice versa. Everyone to their own belief I say.

yeah basically, I glance...and in the long run...nothing really changes, and it certainly doesn't make an effect on the world. Write a friggin' book if you have such a big opinion and then see how many people actually give a crap to read it and how many say something along the lines of, "wow, that really put things into perspective for me...totally changed my view".

Nope never have and never will because I am tempted to put down the people that post such things...and I'd be banned for sucha display so I just stay out

I do find some of the discussions interesting, in a "two-sides-banging-their-heads-against-opposite-walls" kind of way.

There are some very open-minded posters in the Religion forum, who use it as a means of learning about the beliefs of others.

There are others who use it as a venue to ram their beliefs down the throats of anyone and everyone who shows up. They are fairly easy to identify because they KNOW EVERYTHING and they are ALWAYS RIGHT. They talk down to others, because the others are inevitably following the "wrong" religion or belief system, etc.

But what I have learned from reading their posts is that there is no point in even trying to discuss anything with them. They are not open to considering anything that is not already ingrained into their preconceived notion of their own "reality," which is another word for "sanctioned superstition."

So I generally don't get involved too much, since they don't really want to hear anything an atheist has to say anyway....

Which is fine. JSH is for everybody, and there are plenty of other forums where I can go to annoy people!

lol...nothing wrong with a little "smack"; just keep it clean :) I understand though. There's a lot of posts I'd like to crack on, but I'm no better...I just don't see the point in the argumentative ones....they should just start a forum called "Let's Have a Debate" THAT would be awesome...think I'll start one just to see what kind of ruccus I can start LOL

well - if you read my profile - i specifically caution against it. however, since i never take advice i also do it!!

so why? that it the question. well, i think it is to provoke.
provoke thought not people. and God knows, ya can't provoke God!!
c'mon!

so - it is sometimes - very important word here - sometimes - interesting to hear about people's beliefs and how they have arrived at their way of thinking and how they feel and practice their spirituality - their religion. but you should check your agenda at the door. and, stay cool. cause personal beliefs can heat ya up in a hurry. sometimes. except for me. i don't care. i am comfortable with my beliefs. sometimes.

S1ow, I've seen some of your posts; and if everybody handled that forum the way you did, there wouldn't be the level of contentiousness that there is now.

Tolerance and rationality is often more the exception than the rule in a lot of those threads....

If there were a few more like you, they might even be able to have a civilized discussion without someone playing the "The Bible is true because the Bible says the Bible is true" card....!!

i dont know why anyone debates over religion ..because none of them know if they're right so whats the point ..all there are is opinions and you know what can be said about those so why bother ...ive seen a few times where the religion debates have turned into arguments and name calling..now thats showing one's religion ..so i stay away

in christianity, it seems we as servant leaders for God, are mearly doing our job as Christ. And it generally seems a one-way regarding the name calling.

Hey Kalamazoo,

Yeah, I can see how that would seem ironic, but from my viewpoint its not at all ironic. Many (certainly not all) atheists have a deep and passionate interest in "truth", so discussions of religion and philosophy would naturally be of particular interest to them.

If one categorizes people into 'religious' and 'not-religious', then maybe its strange for atheists to be talking religion. But if you consider people as "truth seeking" or "not truth seeking", then of course atheist (and theist) truth-seekers belong in any discussion about truth.

i've been thinking the same thing lately. you can barely influence people in real life, so why do i even debate online? i think i might just leave the religious forums and stick to dicussing faith-based things with other christians.
