Well, when yer in Carl Sagan's Spaceship of the Imagination anything is possible but it doesn't mean its reality.

Exactly, just like the topic of this thread!

I think we should take a mathematical approach...
there is an hypotesis, (earth going towards a catastrophe). In maths an hypotesis is something taken for granted to be able to examine the consequences. As part of the hypotesis it is also stated that you will have a possibility to have a life on the moon (again, granted)
under this assumptions, of course I would go, but if anyone want to stay here and die for SURE because there are chances that on the moon would be hit by an asteroid, fine, stay! I'm going!
Of course if the discussion is based on different terms I'll revert to my initial position and fly to Betelgeuse...

Not a good idea. Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star soon to go supernova, soon being in astronomical terms meaning within a million years. When it goes supernova anything close (within 25 ly) in it's path is doomed.

I don't plan to stay there a million years, maximum one thousand, then I'd like to move on

I didn't mean a million years. I meant within a million years. That could be anywhere from 1 to a million. In fact Betelgeuse may have already gone supernova. If it went supernova today we wouldn't know about it for 500-600 years since it would take light that long to reach us.

Yeah, last I checked, I live in reality.

Same. I would not like to take my wife and children there. How about you Laska Paul?

Telecommunication and Networking Project has just Begun on Moon . The Final Phase of handing over of the project is May 2026. I am Pretty Sure the Main Contractors are doing their best to complete the Work within the Time Frame without delay Once the project is Completed I'll be moving Towards Moon to Settle down there . B'coz Without TelCom/ Networking Life is Simply a Bigggggggggggg Zero ! Looking for your Feed back .

The Moon?
No way. Human technology is not even close to what would be needed even for a base, let alone to live there permanently.
Might as well stay put on this lil planet and accept fate.

Visiting a place is way different than living at a place, especially a place as barren and hostile to life as the Moon.
You would have a better chance at survival if you were dropped at the south pole naked. At least you could breathe and have protection from solar radiation and cosmic rays from the atmosphere before you froze to death.

This ^^^^

I do not see any catastrophe happening nor that the planet is ill.

The only thing that's 'ill' is a certain group of people and who do you think will get to the moon -or any other planet that would be like Earth- first?
Us or those w@nkers?
In that sense it'd be a good plan. Have them all PO so we can enjoy life on Earth again without their manipulating and control.

I'm staying here! I love our beautiful Earth love
And the thought of going into space does not appeal to me at all. It's scare the Bejesus out of me to see Earth get smaller and smaller.
I  Earth.
This Angel is staying here

I'm with you on this one Crystal........................oh yeah, we've gotten rid of a couple of real wankers this year here. Good luck to your people and your election.

Earth is hurtling towards a Catastrophe worse than the Dinasour Extinctions . In such a Horrible situation , If there is a possible Life on Moon would you prefer to Live on Moon with your Family ???????? think think think think think

Nope......obviously too many space cadets are thinking about living on the moon.whoa

This has nothing to do with living on the Moon.

LIVING on the Moon
http://www.universetoday.com/96208/the-moon-is-toxic/
An international team of researchers has attempted to quantify the health dangers of the Moon β€” or at least its dust-filled regolith. In a paper titled β€œToxicity of Lunar Dust” (D. Linnarsson et al.) the health hazards of the Moon’s fine, powdery dust β€” which plagued Apollo astronauts both in and out of their suits β€” are investigated in detail (or as best as they can be without actually being on the Moon with the ability to collect pristine samples.)
Within their research the team, which included physiologists, pharmacologists, radiologists and toxicologists from 5 countries, investigated some of the following potential health hazards of lunar dust:

β€œRIDGE,” short for Space Radiation, Isolation and Confinement, Distance from Earth, Gravity fields, and Hostile/Closed Environments.

A paper by Robert H. Lewis
Human Safety in the Lunar Environment
http://space.nss.org/settlement/nasa/spaceresvol4/human.html
The Moon's surface is exposed to three types of hazardous ionizing radiation. The first two, the solar wind and solar flares, are produced by the Sun. The third type has its origin outside the solar system and is known as galactic cosmic rays.
The Moon is less dense than the Earth and considerably smaller. Its density indicates that the Moon's bulk composition is also somewhat different from Earth's, although it is still a terrestrial (rocky) body. The Moon's surface gravity is only one-sixth the Earth's. And, with its consequently lower escape velocity, the Moon cannot maintain a significant atmosphere. Thus, the surface is directly exposed to the vacuum of space. Lacking an atmospheric buffer, the Moon has a surface temperature that varies over several hundred degrees Celsius during the course of a lunar day/night cycle. A complete lunar day, one full rotation about its axis, requires approximately 27-1/3 terrestrial days.
Compared to the Earth, the Moon is geologically inactive. VoIcanism and internally generated seismic activity are almost nonexistent. Furthermore, water and atmospheric processes are unknown on the Moon. Other than igneous differentiation, which occurred early in lunar history, the main geological process that has acted on the Moon is impact cratering.
it should be pointed out that some lunar regoliths contain a naturally radioactive component material known as KREEP. KREEP, probably a product of volcanism, contains radioactive potassium, uranium, and thorium. Material containing a high concentration of KREEP should not be used for shielding
Moon suits have several disadvantages, one problem being their limited duty cycle. Consumables, recycling systems, and operator fatigue are the most obvious limitations to how long a "moon walk" can last.

While most 'searched' references to living on the Moon are optimistic the few 'reality check' resources pose real world obstacles which will prevent any fast colonization by life quickly trying to escape a global catastrophy on Earth.

We (humans) have most of the 'technology' which would be needed but we don't possess the means to relocate massive numbers of people to the Moon to live for an extended period of time nor the means to support them once they arrive.

People in general, think terraforming Mars is possible in a few decades but terraforming takes far longer and is likely to fail more often than succeed.
The biosphere is complex and still has many factors unknown to us.

Even Earth-based biodome projects have a low success rate. Plus you have the 'human factor' which throws a variable into the mix even if the mechanical is well executed.

The embrace of the fantasy is common considering most influences are optimistic. So-called 'documentaries' which teach people false truth and push speculation unrealistically causes a false sense of reality leading to assumptions that we (the human race) are much smarter and more capeable than we really are. This assumption of the masses negatively impacts innovation and development needed to make the advancements needed to make such fantasies reality.
Much of what the public assumes is science fact is mostly science fiction.

The reality is, no matter what the global catastrophy is, geologic, extra-terrestrial or viral, we as a species are not prepared. All we can do is respond after the fact. We can't prevent them. Unknown threats are not a priority until they are in our faces and by then, it could be too late.

Well, I did have an experimental, orbital restaurant at one point.

The critics were merciless, however.

They said it 'lacked atmosphere.'

[Bah dump dump. tish!]

A low-orbit restaurant, hotel or survival platform is more 'doable' than a Moon habitat. However, without Star Trek's replicator technology it would still need to be 'maintained' by planet-side support.
During a global catastrophe, the constant support missions would fail and everyone in orbit would die.
Plus, its a well-known fact long duration in micro-gravity affects the body processes. Loss of muscle mass is the most obvious but I'm sure there are many other things which happen to the human body in low-orbit. We need our gravity.
Without ground based support, there is also no way to access the satellites which monitor solar storms and CMEs. No advanced heads up to take precautions in time. You would fry.
