I got to agree with moondark I believe you can really enjoy talking to a person and want to meet them but you really won't know how it works until you are around each other

I think that you can fall in love with their written words and how they perceive themselves, but I also think that it is absolutely necessary to talk on the phone and meet in person b/c sometimes our true personality or persona does not show correctly in emails and IMs. For example I am bolder on IM or in emails and say things that I may not say in person or I would say in person only after I got past my shyness and got a feel for the person.
