Science is about what can be proven. The websites I quote use legitimate peer reviewed science as the basis for their assumptions. I would trust those more than any conspiracy theory. Besides I have studied where the beliefs that surround the 2012 stuff originated. One man who completely misinterpreted the Mayan writing and the ancient Babylonian writings and the ancient Sumerian writings and borrowed a little from each and filled in the gaps with make believe.

Ok I see we are have a bit of miss-communication here. I've read this stuff (though I'd forgotten about it being a galaxy alignment rather than a planetary alignment... what can I say, I don't take it seriously enough to commit it all to memory )

What I was talking about was the specific date in 2012 (which these articles also point to ie: Dec 21 2012) Even these two scientific papers say the Mayans have selected that specific date. You said there was no specific dates, I said there were for mayans. That is the only point where we have disagreed as far as I know. what if anything the mayans expected to happen on that date is conjecture, but the date is specific and real the calendar does end then (though I have read in a couple papers that the calendar is missenterpreted too.)

Well with at least couple hundred years that they studied the stars, and matched with the overall accuracy... that suggests it may have been at least partly science not prediction as far as knowing when the alignment would happen... or it could be that, as one of the papers I saw suggested, we have miss-enterpreted their calendar in order to make it match up with that date. I'll still go with the more common idea though over that particular article.
