Third world countries always have a homeless population and in the U.S the ranks of the homeless keep increasing. I read an article where they were housing some homeless people in California in toolsheds for lack of any other available housing. Sad.noway

Haven't heard of that particular instance but there is no doubt, it is bad. There are people living in the brush that surround freeway on ramps and the like. It's most definitely bad

Ontario, California, by the airport. I've seen them.

There is youtube video. Search for "tent" "ontario" "city" "homeless". They are explaining what happened... None sound true.

They are living there, because they were trying to game the system. But, turned out, they were the amateurs.

Should we give them back the mansions and assume their mortgages?

No way we should assume anyone's mortgage, however, many people live in apartments and live paycheck to paycheck so once they lose their jobs they quickly become homeless.

True. You'd think they would save some money instead of wasting it all on Starbucks and Netflix?

How about cell phones and fancy cars.

Yes. You're there.

How about all the crap they all buy? Can they structure their spending according to importance ladder, where rainy day savings would be pretty close to paying rent on a sunny day?

I missed the whole thing.

I had made a gallon of iced tea and used honey combs I had robbed from some bees last month. Wound up they had gone bad and I wound up going and spending the night in the Hospital with Botulism.
Never had food poisoning before and it was a scary trip.

I know, first-hand, how to live and survive living a third-world lifestyle. It's bare, minimum, nothing extra and you learn to survive. It is, being a simpler way of life, more fulfilling. More time on your hands, not such a fast pace and you get to know who your neighbors are.

I read everyone's posts an I thank you for your participation.

Reality check.

With everything pointing and going downhill, I see the US becoming a Third-World Country.

Unemployment is bounding daily, Corps and other companies are either failing or bailing. I don't see it far off that at least half the country will no longer have jobs.

Open borders, no more enforcement of Immigration Laws. Increases in HB VISAs competing for the few jobs that come up.

If you were to make a prediction about when we will be living it, how long would you say before it is reality?

You say this like you are cheering for it to happen.

The economy is bottoming out and showing signs of recovery. I realize this is hard for some to see in our nation of citizens who seek instant gratuitous but be patient. It will take time.

Besides, What happens in America's economy is felt many times over in the rest of the world.

Whether we become a third world nation or not is still open for debate, but even if the economy does recover, it is only a mater of time before our government's fiscal irresponsibility catches up with us again. Simply printing more money and passing our debts on to out future generations is not going to fix anything. Before all the economic stimulus crap our total national debt (everything we owe as a nation) $55,000,000,000,000. We are only able to pay interest on the debt, we have no real money to pay on the principal. Now can someone tell me what Obama has done to fix this? All I've seen him do is tack a few trillion more onto the tab.

i got just a tad off topic last night.
i do apologize.

I tried to gather my own point, and i guess i was trying to say doomsday will happen before the US becomes third worldy.

altohugh some people WILL have rough times and of course unemployment and homeless...well its high now. but to some degree this will always be a problem

I didn't read it that way not sure why you would. It's a very real question. There is no guarantee that as a nation we are going to recover from this.

Try reading the news.

There are signs yes, but not nearly enough to assume a recovery. People are still losing jobs at record rates and business failures, even long standing businesses, are way up as well. Some of what we are seeing is just a reaction to the public euphoria believing that things will change and everything will be better in no time. Won't happen... IF we recover it will take many years. Far longer than Obama's term in office even if he pulls of the miracle of getting re-elected. When things to make a quick turn around people will start to lose hope again and unless everything is in place just right the economy will plummet. So far the bail-out have been screwed up so badly that it's not looking good. There is still some time and it's still doable, but not the way we're going.

The one place I think we really do agree is that we will never be third worldly. If the US goes down we take the world with us.

Thank you for your prediction.

US population; 303,824,640 (July 2008 est.)

Unemployment
In March, the number of unemployed persons increased by 694,000 to 13.2 million, and the unemployment rate rose to 8.5 percent.

Over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has grown by about 5.3 million, and the unemployment rate has risen by 3.4 percentage points. Half of the increase in both the number of unemployed and the unemployment rate occurred in the last 4 months.

Now, that's not counting the folks who have run out of unemployment benefits and are still unemployed.

That's a little over 12,000,000 unemployed in just one month. If the March trend continues, in 12 months we could be looking at almost 1/3 of the population unemployed.

Thus far, I've seen no new jobs opening up.

Should we go and buy some houses? Commercial real estate? Buy stocks?

Take time? How long? Take time sitting on the bottom or recovering up from it?

So, we are at the bottom. Or not yet? You said "bottoming", as in the process. Can the stock market still go down 50%? Or no more than 5%?

Besides, What happens in America's economy is felt many times over in the rest of the world.

That makes you a little happier?
