Define opening up? How long have you known the person? What are you really wanting to know?

Asking seems to be the best policy, it's when they skip around the answer that I tend to get real leery, and push the issue to find out why.

Just reassure them that you're there for them, don't be judgemental, be kind and caring, listen, and only give advice if you actually know what you're talking about, sometimes the best you can do is be a shoulder to cray on. Sometimes that's enough.

Never force someone to open up, give them the opportunity to do so and be patient, sometimes they won't open up, but still be there for them regardless.

Usually with my dry sarcastic humor.
Once I blurt something out, I keep my fingers crossed that they get it. If they don't, and feel insulted (cuz they only think Mr. Bean is funny)), I don't want to talk to them anyways, cuz humor is soo important to me in any relationship, and sarcasm is my sense of humor.
Gotta be able to laugh at yourself, and not take everything so serious. But there are always those tightwads that take every comment soo personal.**sigh**
