Obama's 47 Percent Approval Lowest of Any President at This Point

President Obama's job approval rating has fallen to 47 percent in the latest Gallup poll, the lowest ever recorded for any president at this point in his term.

Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and even Richard Nixon all had higher approval ratings 10-and-a-half months into their presidencies. Obama's immediate predecessor, President George W. Bush, had an approval rating of 86 percent, or 39 points higher than Obama at this stage. Bush's support came shortly after he launched the war in Afghanistan in response to the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said he doesn't "put a lot of stock" in the survey by Gallup, which has conducted presidential approval polls since 1938, longer than any other organization.

"If I was a heart patient and Gallup was my EKG, I'd visit my doctor," Gibbs said in response to questions from Fox. "I'm sure a six-year-old with a Crayon could do something not unlike that. I don't put a lot of stake in, never have, in the EKG that is daily Gallup trend. I don't pay a lot of attention to the meaninglessness of it."

Gallup Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport responded: "Gibbs said that if Gallup were his EKG, he would visit his doctor. Well, I think the doctor might ask him what's going on in his life that would cause his EKG to be fluctuating so much. There is, in fact, a lot going on at the moment -- the health care bill, the jobs summit, the Copenhagen climate conference and Afghanistan."

The new low comes as Obama struggles to overhaul the nation's health care system and escalates America's involvement in the Afghanistan war. He is also presiding over a deep and prolonged recession, with unemployment at 10 percent.

"There's no doubt Obama's 47 percent is mainly a result of the continuing bad economy," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "But there is also a growing concern about government spending and debt, and a sense that Obama is trying to do too much, too soon."

He added: "President Obama has reason to be concerned about his ratings. Even in tough times, presidents have usually been able to stay above the critical 50 percent mark in the first year, when the public is most inclined to give the new incumbent the benefit of the doubt."

Obama officials have not always shown disdain for Gallup. During last year's presidential campaign, Obama adviser David Plouffe, trumpeted "the latest Gallup poll" to reporters because it showed that 53 percent of Americans did not find Obama Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, "trustworthy."

When Gallup began taking presidential approval polls 71 years ago, Franklin Roosevelt had been president for more than five years. During his remaining time in office, his job approval rating never fell below 48 percent.

The next 11 presidents, both Democrats and Republicans, all had higher job approval ratings than Obama at this stage of their tenure. Their ratings were:

-- George W. Bush, 86 percent
-- Bill Clinton, 52 percent
-- George H.W. Bush, 71 percent
-- Ronald Reagan, 49 percent
-- Jimmy Carter, 57 percent
-- Gerald Ford, 52 percent
-- Richard Nixon, 59 percent
-- Lyndon Johnson, 74 percent
-- John Kennedy, 77 percent
-- Dwight Eisenhower, 69 percent
-- Harry Truman, 49 percent

The poll is an average of a three-day tracking of 1,529 adults taken Dec. 4-6. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

Except, try to compare him with presidents who came in with as many issues to handle with so much divisiveness and opposition in the ranks,,,oops, there has only been one or two....

I wonder if you all gauge your children by such a small percentage of difference,,,,,,

The man has three more years and is working harder than any president has had to in my lifetime, but he isnt quitting or giving up, unlike so many so called 'real americans' set on judging him so quickly or so harshly. Those percentages change MONTHY so I am glad he keeps pressing on instead of sweating over them and over every single negative opinion posted in media or on forums.

He knew when he came in he would be watched and critiqued harder than any president in our history, he is a bright man with bright people around him, and by the time he has had three more years the country will be better for it, although the naysayers will be sure to find any of the 400 issues on his plate that werent completed to hold it against him.

Well i can kinda remember one and his name was Ronald Reagen! Damn was he good! Turned evrything around under a strongly held democrat congress and senate! The economic numbers before and during his presidency where tough where they not? But the people knew his tactics where working and the economy continued to improve. Excuses....excuses he is failing period! Not to mention we don't coddle presidents we damand results! Bush didn't get a free ride and this guy has far less to handle than Bush had!

Photo gallery: The First Lady's fashionWhite House press secretary Robert Gibbs took a swipe Tuesday at a Gallup poll showing President Obama’s approval at a low point for his presidency.

The poll, released Monday, put the president’s job approval rating at 47 percent – a figure that Fox News correspondent Major Garrett noted, at Mr. Gibbs’ Tuesday meeting with reporters, “is the lowest of any president dating back to [Harry] Truman at this stage of his presidency.”

In a blame-the-messenger moment, the press secretary, citing swings in Mr. Obama’s approval ratings in Gallup daily tracking data, said: “I am sure a 6-year-old with a crayon could do something not unlike that.”

Gibbs continued: “I don’t put a lot of stake in, never have, in the EKG that is the daily Gallup trend. I don’t pay a lot of attention to the meaninglessness of it.”

The Monitor has asked Gallup for comment. If the polling firm gives one, we will report it here.

Poll numbers bounce around, affected by events in the country and the world. But they do provide a rough guide to the clout a president has in getting his legislative program through Congress.

Falling among friends and enemies

Since November, when Obama’s approval rating was 53 percent, his poll numbers have fallen three percentage points among Democrats, seven points among independents, and four points among Republicans, Gallup reported Monday.

Gallup noted that so far in December Obama has averaged 50 percent job approval – similar to the averages of two presidents who took office when the economy was struggling, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Other recent presidents, who took office in better economic times, had approval ratings of 57 or more in the December of their first terms.

It's not about not supporting him, it's about his actions! He is using failed ideology any business man knows that and that's why his poll numbers are dropping! You don't raise taxes and increase spending in a financial crisis, it's an economic certainty he fails thats the point! If he changes coarse msharmony i will applaude him! I didn't like clinton but even cliton was smart enough to speak rhetoric and behind closed doors work with newt on improving the economy! This guy just doesn't get it!

just who was polled and which demographic ? If you poll nothing but Democrats or people that voted for him, the number will be higher i guarantee. Fox's polls, or polls in general in terms of importance is right up there with knowing the real names of the Geico cavemen.

To fanta: Ron's son, Rand, is running for Senator here in KY...which i would assume Ronny is here in hiding.

Isn't that quaint? Not biased at all! lol.... we all know that polls are biased! I take the left poll and the right combine them and that's far more accurate. But jeez 47 11 months in? He is going down in a ball of flames and i said it long ago and mark my words the Republicans are gonna win in a land slide in 2010 and he will be a lame duck in his last two years in office and as a partisan he will completely fail. he has three months left before elections ramp up and he will be all out of political capitol and done for good! Hang in there guys we will be thru this soon and we are gonna get some good conservatives this time sheit i hope????

Sorry Atlantis, but I don't have any respect for FOX News.
They told a half truth when reporting the Gallup Poll and omitted some info.

This part,
Falling among friends and enemies

They, FOX, did the same thing last month. Only reporting one day of the daily gallup polls. One which listed Obama's approval at 47%.

Even here Gallup lists Obama's avg ratings for the whole month of Nov. were 53%.
Of course Fox failed to mention that then.

I agree Polls are biased.
One could find many different results by Poll shopping.
It depends on the Demographics, the wording of questions, and who is sponsoring the Poll.

If we could find one fair and unbiased it would be one thing, but I can't!

For example,

Wednesday, December 09, 2009

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 29% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-nine percent (39%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -10

Reading that a person is lead to believe Obama's rating is real bad.
Of course they left out the, those who approve and those who disapprove.
All they seem concerned with involves the word strongly.
Anyone who strongly approves or strongly disapproves of the job anyone is doing, to me, is a blind sheep.
At best disillusioned.

It isn't until half way down the page that Rasmussen reports this,

Overall, 48% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) disapprove. These figures have been remarkably stable and have stayed in a narrow range between 46% and 50% every day but one for more than two months. That’s a variance of just two percentage points from today’s level. An analysis by Pollster.com partner Charles Franklin “found that despite identically sized three-day samples, the Rasmussen daily tracking poll is less variable than Gallup.” During Election 2008, the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll was the least volatile of all those tracking the race.

Personally every time a pollster calls my house. I hang up on them. I often wonder if they call someone else or just use the opportunity to report I said what ever suits their fancy.
