I didn't use a leash (mainly because I didn't have one) but I only had one child. He was a handful and very active. He would talk to everyone despite what he was taught. That was his personality. I kept a close eye on him but children have minds of their own. They can easily slip through a crowd and get lost unless you have a death grip on them.

Just because it might not work for one parent/child doesn't mean it is wrong or won't work for others. Everyone is different regardless of age.

I agree with David. If it isn't right for you, then don't do it. But it might work for others.

yea it is a safety thing....

never once when i bought it or used it did i think to myself

oh...freedom for me!!!!! I dont have to parent!!!!

nope....

I was scared todeath of losing her with 3 others to watch also!!

no i didnt like it...it was more a bother than not using it..but it served its purpose....kept her safe from wandering off or being snatched when i had that 2 seconds of looking away...

the bottom dollar for me was............

all four babies came home safe and sound and happy and content....

and had the times of their lives at the zoo....

so all who think i am a sub-human.....a bad mom....a lazy mom....a bad parent....etc.

hahahahbigsmile bigsmile bigsmile

(ooohhhh I'm in the mood!)

ya can kiss my lily white azzz!bigsmile bigsmile

While I applaud your commitment to the safety of your children, I think my argument that leashing kids is just plain wrong stands valid. You even admit that you didn't "like" putting the leash on the child, indicating that you subconsciously felt that it was offensive to you in some manner. Yet your fear of her being abducted while your attention was diverted momentarily convinced you that it was an acceptable alternative.

I would argue that you chose to take four children to the zoo without adequate supervision. You're correct in that it's impossible to watch all of them all the time by yourself. Perhaps you should have scheduled the trip with someone else to assist in keeping an eye on them.

Or here's a novel idea...why don't we teach our children not to wander off, not to accept candy from strangers, the importance of staying close to mommy when in public places, etc? I'm not saying that parents are "bad" if they leash their kids, just that they've fallen victim to the newfound mindset that giving up freedom in the name of safety is an admiral endeavor. I propose that safety comes from knowledge, not a manufactured piece of cloth or chain.

umm excussssssseeeeee me!!!!!!!!!!!!

i only didnt like it cause it was uncomfortable

dont you dare tell me how...when...where and why to take my babies anywhere!!!!! for my kids i will give up anything in the name of their safety.....and i dont have a nanny for them to take to the zoo with us!!!!!! you dont teach a 2 year old not to wonder off...uh maybe i should have crate trained her huh for that....

you are talking to a great mom who raised 4 outstanding young women

and the one who was "leashed" suffered no phys damage...believe me

how did you teach your 2 year old not to wonder off....Id like to submit that to parenting mags and the pediatric journal of medicine

bigsmile bigsmile bigsmile bigsmile bigsmile bigsmile

come on ya gotta know Tammy loves this shizz!!

Ps they had adaquate supervision.....we all made it home happy thank you soooooooooooooooo much for trying to teach me mothering skills

pss

how long have you been a mom....how many kids.....just wondering

I have been a mom to my son for 18 yrs now. And in no way did I imply that you were, or are, a bad mother. In fact, through observation of your numerous posts through the years, I've come to the conclusion that you are one of the truly genuine, kind, and good hearted people on here. I apologize if you took my logic as a direct attack on your mothering ability.

I also did not presume to tell you how to parent your children...where to take them, how to treat them, or any other such thing. I stated that I think leashing children is wrong. Period. I stated my reasons for that belief, that's it's an easy solution to a difficult problem...keeping an eye on children in a scary, dangerous world.

Many, many people take the easy way out these days...it's not a bad thing...more necessity in the fast paced world we live in. Call me old-fashioned...I held my son's hand when necessary when he was two. And when I took my nieces and nephews along and didn't have enough hands, we made a chain with one kid holding the hand of the other.

Again, I merely stated my opinion. I'm not trying to say the practice should be outlawed or that it makes any person using one a monster. I just don't agree with the idea and I'm pretty sure that's what the OP asked...

All I have to say is if people can't control and trust their kids maybe they should working on their parenting. JMO.

And I would have to say this is ridiculous statement....some children are just not able to listen and it takes a long time or even capable of understanding instructions.....i.e. autistic, medicated children (some medinces create behavorial side affects, each child is different and must be cared for in different ways......for some children the simplest tasks can be difficult to achieve......you have no idea about other peoples children or what works or doesn't work for them.....I find this attitude offensive.....since when did control and children go in the same sentence......control is the reason for abusiveness....does it make abusiveness right......people die in this country over control issues and lack there of in their own person......anyone who tells someone else to control their children should be shot....how about allowing your children to be individuals with using safety measures.......wow....really think this thread has gotten out of hand....societal dictates do not make one way right or wrong.....societal dictates made abuse okay and ignored for a long time......societal ideologies still ignore what should not be ignored......its like saying I knew she was abused I heard her screams and nothing was done and now she is dead case in point ZAHARA

I'm sorry if you interpreted my statement that way. I didn't intend for it to come across that way. I should have said that the reason kids misbehave can be a reason for the lack of discipline. I also was not taking into consider children with special needs. So that was my fault.

I can see with 4 kids why someone would opt to use a lease for their kids. However just one, no.

That has nothing to do with abuse in any way. I would never imply that at all. I may be a young mom with a young daughter but that doesn't mean I am uneducated. I may not have the life experience yet but I would NEVER EVER want my child or anyone else's to be abused. So maybe we better just stick to the topic at hand.

I do believe in child safety. I do use them for my lil ones. When people judge a mother for what they are doing they have no idea the situation and should take in to concideration that if it works best for you then do it! I think that every parent has a right to make sure the child is safe and controlled. As was stated before there is alot more to take into concideration than just the parents making the child listen. It is about the child's safety!

Can I get butter on my popcorn?

Now I have a question for the leash opponents:
What is your evidence that a child leash causes harm?

Fergit the harness.
Use a choke-chain.

They learn quicker that way.

No you are right. I should have rephrased and elborated on what I meant to say.

Young children need to learn how to be trusted and that their are boundaries.

Coming from the aunt of one VERY active little boy...

It sometimes takes four adults to keep an eye on my nephew in a crowd - not everybody has that option.

Do what you've got to do to keep your kids safe. I don't know that I would ever use one, but if I ever run into that situation in the future I'm sure my sister-in-law will owe me plenty by then.
