I must admit that I am incredibly envious of best friends since grade school (or earlier).

I see a lot of that here (where I'm at "now") and hear a lot about it from the swamps of Mississippi, burroughs of NY, streets of Cairo, villages of Sorrento coast, baseball fields of TX, etc.

hmmmm to condense...Born LA, CA.....Cali til 5.....rural NE til 9...
....OC, CA through HS.....Consider myself "from" San Diego (15 years of adulthood and "digging in")....

Now in KS (sister/bro in law/niece close by)...but still, thinking about where "home" is.

Do you have the same friends since from when you were in diapers?
Did you assimilate to an area as a young adult (call it home)?
Do your folks still live in the same house?
Do you have a friend who could embarrass the *%^& out of you, but wouldn't ever!!!?

Yes, I have a bestfriend since grade school. We both could laugh at our own selves - even during those times, maybe the reason why we got along so well.

We separated ways since after high school, me moving out of my parents house and going to different parts of the country, her staying in the same locality we had and finally going out of her way too. The friendship that we had has not been changed since then. There was a time when we lost contact with but when we get to keep in touch again, it was like the same as always.

Did you assimilate to an area as a young adult (call it home)?
My birthplace was my home for 16 years and I had never had such memorable times than in that place.

Do your folks still live in the same house?
Not anymore.

Yes, we are now in two different worlds, what with her being in Canada and me here in our country but we always have the same friendship, the very same way of treating each other - always brutally frank to each other but always have the respect one has for a bestfriend.

I am a gypsy.
But I had stability for the first 9 years
of my life.
Then it was state to state as parents
married and remarried.
Many schools after that.
But through Junior HS,I had the same friends
I still have.
Do you know what they did?
When they heard that my ex had stolen
everything I owned (which included yearbooks)
they got together and copied 4 years of HS
yearbooks (just our class) and bound them
together as a yearbook, just for me.
So I got to see them all get older, something
I missed.
Weepy time :-)
So I think of San Lorenzo, California, as my home.
Though it was long ago now.
Home is where the heart is.

My mom moved every 3 to 4 months...across town, neighboring town, out of state...didn't matter...I changed schools so often that I barely have school pictures. Somehow, we always ended up here in Anderson, and that somehow has allowed me to have my best friend for 45 years. We met in 2nd grade and have never lost one another. We still see each other at least once a month, our kids grew up together....it's been a great ride!

Can't say I do my dad it seemed could not stay in one place long enough for us to make many friends..Matter of fact I have lived in the same area now for 31 years and in the same house for 19 of those years. Both of my parents have since passed.

And it takes a lot to embarrass me normally I'm the one that seems to embarrass them but always in fun...bigsmile

Nope, I've moved around enough that there is practically nobody I know who I've known for more than a short time. And the only exceptions are people I very rarely talk to.

Did you assimilate to an area as a young adult (call it home)?

No, there has never really been anyplace I thought of as home. And I never stayed in any one place very long. I moved away from my parents' home at 15.

Do your folks still live in the same house?

They've been dead for years.

Do you have a friend who could embarrass the *%^& out of you, but wouldn't ever!!!?

No one is that close to me.

They're dead but, lived in the same area all their lives.

Nope. I shock lots of folks. Don't ever really meet a stranger.

I have lived in areas ranging from a week to, the longest time of 10 years.
Texas will be ten years next year.
Wonder if it's time to sell and move on?

Born and lived in D.C. till I 13. Moved to MD, lived a couple of different places there over the 30 years there. Moved to PA, spent 17-18 years there and have lived in ME for just over a year.

I have no friends from grade school or before, my oldest friendships are 40 plus and 30 plus years long and still going strong although the friend of 40 some years and I don't talk often it is always as if we had talked the day before.

My parents have moved more times than I have.

I have a girlfriend that I met after moving here and she is just as valuable to me as my old friends!

I live where I was born and raised. I HAVE travelled but, anywhere I went...(and I have been to some pretty nice places)....didn't feel like home.

I am a texas boy from the Styx.

Many of my neighbors are people that I have known since early childhood.

As far as friends go....they pass in and out of the scenery with few exceptions. Yet, no matter how long a friend is gone....it is still very cool to catch back up with them again occasionally.

My parents sold thier old homestead and bought a very nice home tucked away on Steam Boat Mountain. Quaint and cool with an awesome view of a cliff in thier back yard.

Friends who could embarass me?..............PBBBBBBTTTTTT!!! (sorry...shot beer out of my nose)

...........you are perhaps making the mistaken assupmtion that I can be embarrassed.

But!!!!!..........I AM the friend that could embarass the living **** out of my friends!

:)

Honest answers Lex!
Have you (really) made peace with this (more than intellectually)?

grew up in one house in the burbs of Toronto. 25 years appx.
the whole neighbourhood was disbanded from inflation and marriage and work etc.

Have a friend from then but hardly ever see eachother. Kept changing the groups of people i hung with all through my life.
I get bored easily ... probably add of some sort.

Moved to another city for University and lived there for 15 years ... that was my home and I knew and know many people in that city.

a woman lead me out to the boonies where I'v now lived for almost 20 years. great neighbours and friends but not old old friends.

this is now my home. My original home is unrecognizable and nobody I knew still lives the area.

parents are dead ... best friend is dead.

I'd like to think so, but there are days when I'm really not convinced.

Rationally, I have to fall back on "it is what it is" because I can't go back and change it.

I'll admit there's a part of me that would love to know what it's like to actually feel close to someone for more than a few months, but it all seems very unlikely.
