I think we are inherently good. Think about it... when you do something bad, you are guilty stricken. If you help others, you feel happy.

Just me but, good would seem to be the mid-ground between saintly and evil.

With me, it depends on the people, places or things and what affect my basic nature.

I have blood relatives I cut all ties with and wouldn't waste the beer to piss on their graves. I also pass strangers I would protect with my life.

In protector or self-preservation mode, no rules to apply. I would do what is necessary to stay alive. Is that evil to slash a mans throat who has a knife in your ribs? Is it evil to shoot a person between the eyes who is caught in the act of molesting children?

Can it be evil to do favors expecting some sort of gratification or acknowledgement?

To know the answers, I must always check my motive.

My best guide as to how I am responding is when I go to bed at night and do my daily self-inventory. Will I sleep with a clear conscience?

You left "horny " out of the equation...

A horny person has no conscience.

For me..."good " or "evil "...goes with the situation.

Some days I am as good as baby Jesus smooching Mother Theresa.

Other days...I am Satan with a barbed wire hard on.

I just play to the situation....they change constantly.

if you are confronted with the situation like..

you see a drowning kid, would you save him?

That depends...has that kid been a screaming Brat who has made me think...

Beat your kid...

In that circumstance....I gotta be honest and say ..."No "

Let him drown.

Do you believe we are basically good and some of us fall to poor behaviors, or that we are inherently bad and some conquer their baser nature to rise to goodness?

What are your thoughts?

I believe that I am inherently good, and that everyone who disagrees with me must be purged with flame and chainsword. pitchfork

But seriously, I do believe that because we are social animals by nature, we would probably fit into what most would call a "good" baseline naturally. At the very least intending good.

Now, "What is good" and "What is evil", are far trickier questions than "Are humans social animals", with the worst part being that there are probably people that will disagree with any objective definition we could come up with - and that's exluding people that the majority of us would call "evil". It's very subjective, really.

Toodygirl5, I could be mistaken, but it appears to me that you have gone from simply stating your belief to arguing against the beliefs stated by others here.

You are mistaken, I am just stating my belief on the OP, like many others here. They have no facrs as to how any one person is born, I dont't think I seen any real facts posted just opinions.

Having worked in forensic counseling for years, I have to side with the famous Park Dietz, who when asked this question simply smiled. I also don't wish to offend anybody or argue.
biggrin So...you're not volunteering to referee this one? what

I will mention that one of the most popular books on forensic counseling is entitled "Bad Men Do What Good Men Dream"
