Do you believe we are basically good and some of us fall to poor behaviors, or that we are inherently bad and some conquer their baser nature to rise to goodness? What are your thoughts? i dont think we are born good or evil I think we are born selfish and primal and have to be taught about right, wrong, conscious, and consderation for others,,,, We're born helpless and completely dependent..so, needy and selfish by natural design...which in this form is not a bad or evil thing. I think a lot of people equate selfish with bad lr evil...though that's not the case at all. MS...thanks for your two cents. You always have something thought provoking to add.

we're neither good nor evil we're born we're taught the difference between right and wrong and we then make our own decisions on how we're going to behave this it's our free will. |

Having worked in forensic counseling for years, I have to side with the famous Park Dietz, who when asked this question simply smiled. I also don't wish to offend anybody or argue.  So...you're not volunteering to referee this one?   I will mention that one of the most popular books on forensic counseling is entitled "Bad Men Do What Good Men Dream" While I'm not 100% sure I really want to know what bad men want, it will probably bump the next book on my list by virtue of your recommendation alone. You left "horny " out of the equation... A horny person has no conscience. For me..."good " or "evil "...goes with the situation. Some days I am as good as baby Jesus smooching Mother Theresa. Other days...I am Satan with a barbed wire hard on. I just play to the situation....they change constantly. So when I've said, "No thanks", I was just not 100% horny?

Some turn to evil as life throws all those damn curves at them Some just choose to be evil for self gain Evil is the easy path to walk in life Choosing goodness is the path less traveled in these times i think But striving to show and be that goodness Makes the world a better place... I'm not quite sure how it all started but I don't think my K through 2nd grade teachers were too thrilled that I was breathing.
But, I do remember the day I had to go really bad and it took forever to get down the hall to the bathroom. I was so excited to finally be in front of my stall I broke the zipper tab off my pants and pee-d myself. |

We are just clay hoping to be molded by the right people. Once in awhile the clay has a stain in it, and it cannot always be cleaned. We do the best we can with what we have. |

Generally people are good. It's when someone takes advantage of our good nature, is where the bad comes in. Then, it's more a control issue. Some will let it go. Others will seek retaliation for the bad they recieved. Depends on the person, and how much they will put up with. |

It is impossible to account for all of the variables present that can cause someone to do something horrific, just as it is impossible to account for all of the variables necessary for a person to grow up a productive member of society. And then there are some people who just want to watch the world burn for the sake of watching it...The Ted Bundy's, Dahmer's, and Dennis Raders' of the world. Better is subjective, but raw percentages we aren't doing too bad. |

Can we exceed that? or is it closer to an absolute? honestly I am equally fascinated by those who come from the worst possible environmental conditions and achieve & succeed or find some kind of peace love & happiness your comment reminded me of those people - the ones who miraculously rise above fascinated by those exceptions |

I don't think we can do better, but I also don't think we are doing all that terrible currently.
It would require too many variables working correctly to make much use of the end result. I honestly think that the day we fully understand how the brain works is the day we quit progressing, so I hope it never occurs. |

I think of it as infinity...the day we understand how the brain works we will also understand how much more there is to learn and so it goes....... I think we can - do better - I think one thing that makes us uniquely human is that we can take our actual (versus perceived) potential and re-form it, change it, build on it, or in the worst case, destroy it. We can do the best we can with what we have ... and build on that. it's potential, becoming realized and a new potential forms free will & potential, intelligence and motivation, a time to understand and a time to grow. I hope we never stop growing |
