Crimes of hatred and prejudice—from lynchings to cross burnings to vandalism of synagogues—are a sad fact of American history, but the term “hate crime” did not enter the nation’s vocabulary until the 1980s, when emerging hate groups like the Skinheads launched a wave of bias-related crime. The FBI began investigating what we now call hate crimes as far back as World War I, when the Ku Klux Klan first attracted our attention. Today, we remain dedicated to working with state and local partners to prevent these crimes and to bring to justice those who commit them.

..seems to me that the impending element is 'bias', which isn't so easily proven in every random act of 'self defense'

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/civilrights/hate_crimes

also, has Zimmerman been charged with a hate crime?

no.. but does not mean they did not try to get this to happen and I believe he is a minority also.

It offends me when people on TV will report CRACKER and its ok. How many journalists have been fired for using the N word. I hate both slangs.

But back to the Zimmerman trial and away from this bunny trail.

Our system of justice hopefully will come out what happened.

What my Beef is , is ADULTS using a KID to promote hatred ,to confuse public opinion with their own agenda. I am not blaming the parents.. they went to a lawyer.. why to try and get answers and to get counsel about what is best for them and Trayvon. I do not look at grieving parents as Villians!! no matter who they r

we have different experiences I guess

what tv personalities have you heard use the word 'cracker' and still be employed?

and I just didn't see this kid as being used, she had to come forward when evidence she was speaking to him during that time surfaced

it would make no sense to ignore what she said once she came forward,,

What news network did u watch today. CNN used it. They did not blurt out the N word. even during the trial Cracker was allowed the N word was silenced out.

What world do I live in.. The world where fair is fair

watch Chris Rock I believe his name is doing comedy.. he's disgusting and it's N this and N that and its so funny. to who?

I think its a rare circumstance

but I agree, in the context of reporting on the trial, either report all slurs or none

and I agree that Chris Rock isn't funny,, not because he uses the n word,,but because I just don't think he is funny,,,

Rare go to CNN dot com and read the story heres a litte bit

"And then he said, 'That N-word is still following me now,'" said Jeantel. "I asked him how the man looked like. He just told me the man looked 'creepy.' 'Creepy, white' -- excuse my language -- 'cracker. Creepy [expletive] cracker

Here we have the press quoting. the N word and then Cracker. what did trayvon say. If it would of been the other way around. we would not even know the case exist

Im not sure if the 'n word' is what she actually said or if she said NIGG$$,,,,perhaps that's how she worded it

but in any case, I say its rare, because its ONE trial , and not the norm of reporting,,,

interesting though, that he referred to Z as both n and c,,possibly reflective of his growing agitation, or the closeness of Z to where his race was more evident,,,,,

what I am trying to convey is that Cracker is perfectly fine to be used in this country even though it is a derogatory word used about,to,against white people. Yet Paula Dean lets say is being called a rasists because she used the N word. Use the N word and u r white. U r a Rasist PERIOD> but use Cracker oh well that's just fine.

I am still overcoming a problem going to casino's. yet I have never seen Rasism in their except from black people. but that's ok.

One evening I was at the Casino Queen in East St Louis. a black guy was on each side of me who were friends. I got so tired of them calling each other the N word over and over. While the dealer was shuffling I said to them " is it ok for me when I talk to u to call u a N word? Hek no we will kick your but. I said then why do you use it. They said were brothers that's why. I said u know at this table with u all talking across me and if u want to use the N word then to talk to each other then I will to.. Isn't that fair. I hate that word and why do I have to listen to it.. They looked at each other and padded me on the back.. you're cool man you're cool.. we get what u r saying" and they quit. whats good for the gander is good for the goose. just get rid of the N word the c word the B word so on and so on.. and be fair to everyone and then maybe rasm words will disappear

I don't think racial slurs are acceptable most times by those they are intended to insult,,,,whatever they are....

I do doubt however, that ridding racism is as simple as getting rid of words,,,,

I could start another thread on the significance of the CONTEXT in which words are used,, but I sometimes start feeling like the black spokesperson in a thread of non black folks,,,,

Leave it to the likes of Sharpton and Jackson to rekindle the fires of racism in America!

That's their biggest promotion of themselves.... without racism, they are irrelevant!

Yep.

That's exactly what I mean.. words are words good or bad.

But like I said from the very beginning. what upsets me is ADULTS in control who used what she said on a recording over a phone to put public attention on the law. On society to upset it. to make public opinion ticked off causing the Law to react for reasons we all know to indite Zimmerman, to cause a police chief to resign to cause a prosecuter to relieve himself from the investigation.. no different that jury tampering.. really way way worse and when this is done and over. all those involved in these actions be brought to trial on national TV to make people in power think twice before they ever do this again.. people could of been killed, seriously hurt.. This is what troubles me about what is happening in America. The News and Internet was used for a purpose that was wrong. They used a childs words. they led her to believe something that was not true.. They LIED to her in context. now she is in the national spot light. where she never wanted to be and if they would not of done that to her maybe this trial would not be national news

IM missing where anyone was lead anywhere

the trial is news because parents had a voice, I find it hard to take issue with that

a child died and they should have a chance to find out what happened and why their child is dead,,,

we are all of the same race, human

but we also have other asthetic categories used to describe us

such as black ,white, etc,,,

much of our history has shown these asthetic categories affect the reactions others have towards and with us

as to why race was brought up, you will have to ask Sojourn, since it was he who introduced it into the conversation

Speaking for myself JB.. I started this thread because today from watching the trial. I could not believe what I was hearing when the young woman last year said she never wanted to get involved and the Family of Trayvon who was killed asked her to (in brief summary) to do a phone interview with their lawyer about what happened. she agreed. she thought only the lawyer and the mother and father was their and it was for them. no one else.. she then learns from a friends phone call to her they heard her voice on TV.. A press conference by the Lawyer, Jesse Jackson. Al Sharpton ect which caused protest all over the country. she never agreed to this nor did she have any understandingtany

That just goes to show you that you should never trust a lawyer.

What "she thought" was incredibly naive. Why would she even think that this interview was "just for them, no one else?"

Didn't she know that an interview via a telephone would almost certainly be recorded? If so, did they actually tell her that this interview would be confidential? Probably not. In fact, they probably told her it would be recorded.

Let this be a lesson to EVERYONE. Never consent to that sort of thing, especially over the phone!!!! Don't be stupid.

if someone is witness, and a death is involved, it is the responsible thing to speak up, and often even if they don't want to,, they will be legally compelled

I never heard her voice on tv, it would be interesting to hear such an archived report,, although I did hear the account referred to,,,

what she heard could be very relevant, considering its proximity to the death,,, it was not unreasonable for her to be expected to testify or , considering her account, for her testimony along with the corroboration of Zimmerman himself, to be taken seriously

Id get the press involved too, sometimes that's the only way to assure you can get justice,, is to expose injustice,,,(When it occurs)

No it was not Sojurn.

It was this in the O.P.

Oliver, who says he has known Zimmerman for a decade, told ABC that the 28-year-old likely said “goon” on the 911 tape rather than “coon” as many people believe. “I don’t know of anyone younger than 40 who uses ‘coon’ as a racial epithet anymore.”

The distinction is important because what he said that night could make the difference in whether authorities will be able to charge Zimmerman with a hate crime, reports the Associated Press. “If that was a racial epithet that preceded the attack on Trayvon Martin, we definitely have a hate crime,” a legal expert says.

These authorities and the press are so anxious to charge someone with a "hate crime" they are imagining things. Its so stupid. They were both black.. what the hell are they talking about ?

I didn't read all of the posts in this thread, but excuse me for asking a dumb question. Why all the talk about racism when both of these people are the same race? It doesn't make much sense.

I agree.. no she knew she was being recorded and she did it reluctantly. she is a kid.. still in HS they got her to do what they wanted her to do.. she said she did not even tell them everything.. she basically told them some and what she thought they probally wanted to hear. Zimmerman had not been indited and this lawyer , Jesse and Sharpton took it and ran.. I personally believe if Zimmerman would not been arrested after this Press conference a riot somewhere might of started.. we know protest started all over the nation.. Inciting a RIOT is serious business. and I hope all involved using this CHILD will be held accountable. This is what the Powerful do. this is how they make names for themselves when they should be in PRISON

we are all of the same race, human

but we also have other asthetic categories used to describe us

such as black ,white, etc,,,

much of our history has shown these asthetic categories affect the reactions others have towards and with us

as to why race was brought up, you will have to ask Sojourn, since it was he who introduced it into the conversation

Zimmerman is 'hispanic' white, , treyvon is black

hate crimes do happen and they toyed with the possibility, but in the end, he ISNT charged with a hate crime, so its irrelevant at this point

bottom line is two parents wanting to know how their child could leave to get candy from a store and wind up shot dead before he made it home

and I cant blame them

and if the people they dealt with seemed indifferent to their concern, I also don't blame them for getting the press involved,,,

if someone is witness, and a death is involved, it is the responsible thing to speak up, and often even if they don't want to,, they will be legally compelled

Legally compelled how?

You are stupid to talk to police, and especially lawyers. They can legally lie to YOU. Doesn't anyone watch the CLOSER?
Any good lawyer will tell you never talk to the police for any reason.

Case in point. You see how they used her words?

I never heard her voice on tv, it would be interesting to hear such an archived report,, although I did hear the account referred to,,,

what she heard could be very relevant, considering its proximity to the death,,, it was not unreasonable for her to be expected to testify or , considering her account, for her testimony along with the corroboration of Zimmerman himself, to be taken seriously

Id get the press involved too, sometimes that's the only way to assure you can get justice,, is to expose injustice,,,(When it occurs)

I would never get the press involved. Years ago, maybe. But today I know who owns and controls the press.

I never said it caused a riot..I said they used a child who did not understand.. That's why we have so many child protective laws/services. she told them she was 16 when she was 18 now she is 19 and in the 12th grade. so the lawyers had checked her out or they never would of did this. that's how they got away with it.. like JB said they can lie to her, lawyers are very good at getting u to say what they want you to say. and her state of mind they used. Sharpton left his mothers funeral to make the press conference. PROTEST happened all over this country.. What I said if the police/govt. would not of arrested/indited Zimmerman very likely a riot somewhere could of broke out.

MY BEEF IS WITH THE LAWYER, SHARPTON AND JACKSON.

I believe Zimmerman will be found innocent.

Then them interfering very well maybe why he gets off.. Either way I hope they get investigated and all the people who PROTESTED before come out and PROTEST to get them indited!!!!!

Yeah. Sometimes a person will see a black-colored Latina and assume that she is in the same category as non-Hispanic black-colored people who were born and raised in the USA. Is a person practicing racism by making such a false assumption about the back-colored Latina?

how was she 'used'? she gave a testimony that was pertinent since she was the last to speak to the victim.....

no more than they are being sexist to assume a blonde haired beauty with breasts and long hair is a girl

our eyes see and our brain categorizes, that's natural,,,,

but when we JUDGE a person,, not describe their asthetics,, that is when we get into racism,,,
