A chaotic car chase that began when a woman tried to ram a security barrier near the White House ended with shots being fired near the U.S. Capitol, putting the Hill temporarily on lockdown and causing what one witness described as "mass panic."




Capitol Hill sources confirm to Fox News that the suspect is dead.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, one officer was also injured in a related car crash.

The chase and subsequent stand-off near the Capitol went down as lawmakers were debating under the dome about the partial government shutdown. Officials say the incident was not related to terrorism.

One person could be seen being carried off in a stretcher -- it's not clear if that was the officer in question, or the suspect. It's also not clear who fired the shots.

Terrance Gainer, the Senate sergeant at arms, told Fox News that this appears to be an "isolated incident." Gainer also said the officer injured crashed a police cruiser while trying to join the chase. The cruiser "seriously clipped" a barricade, he said, but the injuries are "not life threatening."

The chase and stand-off caused panic on Capitol Hill, with sirens blaring inside the building and lawmakers and their staff being ordered to stay in place. The lockdown has since been lifted, and those inside the Capitol are no longer being ordered to "shelter in place."

Sources told Fox News the incident began with a car chase, which started when a woman tried to ram a gate near the White House.

Several police cars pursued her to a location near the Capitol building. When they boxed her in, sources said, the driver got out and five or six shots were fired. Witnesses saw a baby being taken from the car.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene.

"We were definitely caught off guard, we were scared," said Matt Knuppeo, who said he was touring the Capitol building when the stand-off unfolded. "It was mass panic for a while."

"We just heard the gun shots -- pow pow pow pow," witness Emily Wheeler told Fox News.

The developments come as lawmakers were debating a series of small spending bills, amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The violence follows the mass shooting last month at the Washington Navy Yard.

The news said she may have been trying to hurt the President then Members of Congress.

My first thought was I hope the President and the First Family are ok, then when I saw she was going to the Capitol I was praying that none of our elected officials got hurt.

I may disagree with them on a regular basis, but they are still people with lives and families. If you want someone out of office that bad, start up a PAC and raise money to help their opponent in the next campaign, take them out by the ballot box not by force. Violence is not the answer. A lot of people could have gotten hurt or killed because of this BS, including innocent people.

People are angry. But if some harm the President there maybe a Civil war right here in the US. Because the GOP would be behind the harming.

People are angry at this President and administration and how they are trying to turn the Government into a dictatorship the same way the NSDAP gained their dictatorship.

Even the cops who got injured protecting the White House and Capitol Hill today have not been getting paid since Tuesday. When Dirty Harry Reid called one of them in the hospital today they cop told him off basically and Dirty Harry was to stupid to realize that that's what it was LOL.

Well, it's a straight shot from the White House to the Capitol, so who knows if she was actually planning on going to the Capitol, or just trying to get away from the police.

Where's the link about the cop telling him off? I'm interested in reading that story.

I'll tell you what's going to start a civil war, when the people in this country wake up and realize that both the left and the right are being played against each other in order to distract them from what's really going on, then the civil war will happen. It's high time that both sides quit goose stepping along to the orders being given out by their leaders who are actually a puppet of someone else.

The woman shot was probably just mentally ill and didn't get the help she needed in time, before flipping out. I read today, on another site, that she had fallen down some stairs over a year ago, and when she came back to work, they had to fire her for her behavior, pointing to probable brain injuries.

To me it looked like a confused tourist in a big town, a woman, with her baby daughter, trying to navigate around Capital Hill.... ever been there? There's also a report I read somewhere that she was sleep deprived, or tired......

It looked like she was forced off the road, not tried to "RAM" anything, then a dozen guys with guns rush the car, and while they may have been police how many of you are trained for that type of a scenario under those conditions?

I'll hold my call on this one for a while before I label it anything but a sad accident.

It is a sad incident, but a confused tourist doesn't try to get through a White House security checkpoint, hitting the barricade more than once, hitting a uniformed secret service agent and lead police on a chase through the city to Capitol Hill.

So you have been in her situation before? It seems she had a brain "injury" from a fall the year before. She probably should have been subjected to scrutiny or testing as a result to continue her driving privileges (I was after my injuries.... but it's not required in all states)....didn't happen.

They could have shot out her tires or used spike strips....also didn't happen.

Instead they opened fire on a car with a child inside, as well as firing into a public roadway.....

So before you start casting blame or assuming, you might ask yourself whose "sanity" should be questioned here!
