Well I would like more to work with then a simple hi. But at the same time I do not want your whole life story in your first message either. So something between those would be nice.

Sometimes a nice hello message helps to break the ice to see if that person is interested in you. You don't want to be too forward.

Substance. I want complete sentences, proper spelling and grammar, and some actual relevant material about the person. Otherwise there's no point. By the way, this never happens....!
