I think name calling is rude. I just like to say what I think about a topic. In general, I want to comment on a topic, not on the person who posted it; and I like to use "I" statements. "I think", "I feel", etc. not, "You are.."

And still people take offense.

There are people -- I am convinced of this -- who go out of their way to try to find something to be offended about.

We used to have a guy on here who would file an abuse report every time someone disagreed with him. Didn't matter how the disagreement was phrased, how civil or cordial it was -- if you disagreed with him, it was abuse, plain and simple.

I personally don't (in public) rate profiles anymore -- too many people getting too bent out of shape if someone makes a suggestion -- and I've never been very good with doling out blanket praise for things that simply don't merit it....

Sometimes it's ok to sugarcoat. I did that last night with a woman who has a brain tumor. I was driving past her house on my golfcart and stopped to say hello. She lives near Raliegh NC but also owns a home in the same resort as me. Her name is Daisy and she was crying because she took her last treatment of kemo this week and it broke out a rash on her body. She has to wear a wig and all of a sudden she has broken out with these little red bumps all over her body. She was upset because she wanted to go to the beach today. I told her that no one would notice the rash and if they started staring, just yank the wig off and slap em with it. That should scare the hell out of em. But I did keep reassuring her that no one would notice her rash. Poor woman is only 40 years old. She just now called me and asked if she could borrow a few of my beach chairs so I guess it worked.

You were just being kind. That is different. Brutal honesty at that point would have been cruel and pointless.

but Lex yet you have remained honest with people and with yourself.

sounds and seems like a personal problem if a person is not sure of themselves.

I need to take a page from your book. I can't tell you how many times I have been blasted in that forum; and still I keep beating my head against the wall trying to "help" people. Some people are actually appreciative of my input and I have made some friends from there; but some people have actually e-mailed me and told me that they don't comment on my profile and I shouldn't comment on theirs. The fact that I never posted in Rate my profile and they did seemed to escape them.

Right -- it's just that there are always some who take issue with reality.

I'll make fun of bad spelling or grammar, for example -- without ever naming names (I don't really have the time to list a couple hundred thousand people!) -- and someone will, almost inevitably, take offense. I'm supposed to ignore reality and just blithely accept that there are going to be a significant percentage of posts which I will never be able to decipher, because someone doesn't understand the need for clarity and comprehensibility in a written medium!

I'm sorry, I just don't operate that way.

Tactfully honest if possible! If that's sugar coating, then maybe I do. I may play with suggestive statements if I'm riled enough, but never name call. I think it's incredibly immature and distasteful. I did it once when I was young and will not do it again.
