I'm trying to help Lex fix his computer. It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 that won't turn on. The LEDs used to flash, but now only the power light comes on and shuts off after a second. The fans and drive aren't spinning, so it's not starting up at all. The laptop doesn't have a battery as it never seemed to work properly, so it runs entirely using the power cord. I thought this might have been a power issue, but he mentioned an error message he received a day or so before it died that had a black screen noting that the computer was getting too hot.

So I believe the issue is with the fan or the heatsink (basically not starting up so that it doesn't catch on fire), but I have no clue how to tackle those problems.

If anyone can help with this issue, he'd greatly appreciate it.

i don't know how to fix it, but i have had a similar problem with my dell inspirion 9100 since i bought it...the battery never would hold a charge and i too have to plug it into an outlet all the time. mine has been acting funny too....i think it might die as well.

i will let you know if i can figure out what is wrong....and how to fix it...

I have a Gateway desktop.. mine did that to me back in November.. Would only power on so far, then would get an error message and the fans wouldn't run, it wouldn't fully boot windows.. It ended up being my Motherboard.

You may have a bad pwer supply now or the cord with the black box on it may have gotten too hot since it was over worked with no battery to give it a break. Try another power cod if someone else has the same type. Call Dell for instructions if that does not work

Did the power LED blink? If so, how many times? If the power LED blinks at all it is usually hardware issues, which can be anything from a bad heat sink, power supply, fan, motherboard, or graphics card. I'd call Dell and see if a tech can help out.

Not sure if u fixed this.. but its either your power supply is bad or fans aren't working, these are both replaceable parts that can be bought from dell... i know this has been mentioned already, but i say it again.. :)

Thanks for the help. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the fan or a heat sink. Hopefully, I'll get it figured out.

Well we have to get Lex back up and running...

The problem is the power supply, or power supply related...

If the fans will not power up, then the power supply is either bad, or there is a major league problem with the mother board. it would take a direct short of a component on the mother board to keep it from powering up normally.

The fans should start on power up, normally(but not always) a shorted component will not affect the start up within the first minute of initializing. I suspect the power supply itself has expired.

And hi to Lex

Sorry, I only deal with desktops. It does sound Power supply related, but it could be any number of other things. He should contact Dell and if it's not under warranty, then take it to a dell certified computer repair shop to have the issue diagnosed.

I have a Dell inspiron 2500 and it gave me the same problem. It turned out to be the battery, with this computer, it has to have the battery in and conected. My battery wasn't making good contact. Try this, it worked for me.

Perhaps by asking a expert online will help. Here is a link. There are more out there though.

Thank you again to everyone replying and trying to help. I really appreciate it. It'll be a few days before I can get my hands on his computer, but I plan to take it apart and troubleshoot. I'm going to check the power supply first, because the fans aren't powering up at all. After that, I'll look at the fans themselves because of that error message he was getting. Then, it's to the motherboard.

If anyone has any other helpful resources online on troubleshooting procedures/how-to's, they would be greatly appreciated.
