I'm sure there's a support group somewhere out there on the web, try Googling it.

Would I be remiss in not mentioning just what effect alcohol has on a diabetic? It's really a painful way to go. I'm also thinking that the self-pity will mitigate as well when your body reacts to being treated better.

Both my parents have diabetes and I am told by the doctors that I am in most likely hood going to have it someday also. It's not the end of your life or the world. You just need to adjust your livestyle to accommodate your situation. Make sure you stay active, take your meds and maintain sugar levels.

Many people have diabetes and have long happy productive lives. Good luck!flowerforyou

When I first got sober in AA, they folks there would talk about how alcoholism is a disease, like diabetes is a disease. That I would always have it, it will never go away or be cured. And like diabetics, there were a few things I had to do each day in order to keep my disease in check.
I don't know why they chose diabetes as an example, but they did. I am a nurse and mostly what I see are the people that did not comply with their treatment. Not good results.
My sugggestion is to find a support group and find some people there that have their disease under control, instead of the disease controling them. Follow their example, do what they do, and you can anticipate the same good results.
Good luck.

I've been diabetic for almost 30 years, don't let it control you is the first rule. Don't stop doing anything that you want to do, just do it in moderation, don't dwell in it, then you are losing the battle, don't listen to the people who say "Oh you're diabetic, my grandma was diabetic and she died" tell em to F off....

i agree.dont listen to the horror stories.......i did and it really messed with me for awhile.i have been diabetic for 13 yrs now.the main advice i have is keep up on your health......diabetes affects alot of stuff with your body.......from your eye sight to your sexdrive.keep it controlled and keep getting health checkups.i unfortunately dont have insurance and cant afford all the tests and meds that would do me wonders, but i do manage.just know that youre not the only one with diabetes, that there are groups out there.....and it wont kill you unless you want it too......do reasearch and learn what affects the sugar levels the most and you will be fine

I'm sorry... But I saw your profile... And if you drink like that regularly? That can be a big part of the problem. I'm not trying to insult you... Honestly. My whole family has it. I'm like a watch-dog for them.

I completely agree. I've been a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic for almost 30 years. Bottom line; you control it, don't let it control you.

Diabetics can drink alcoholic drinks. Ones that don't spike the blood sugars up, such as beer, wine or anything mixed with sugar soda. There are several out there one can drink with no significant rise in blood sugar, such as Bacardi and diet.

Being a type 1 can make you feel low, especially adjusting to it and learning how to deal with it over the first few years.

And yes, there are always others who have things much worse. In addition to being a type 1, I also have MS, which is a devastator. The way to get past any disease is to take control of it (know it better than the doctors do) and LIVE!

Many cities have free health/dental clinics now, generally located in a church and some actually have a freestanding clinic. If you do a research in your city, you might find several or contact your local health department for a list. Good luck because as a diabetic you certainly need to maintain your health.

Diabetes can be a very lonely disease. It’s often misunderstood by the general public because there are the two types. They are almost opposite of each other in certain respects. Also, people who don’t have the illness don’t realize what a friggin hassle it is because blood sugar effects just about everything in our bodies. Be prepared for your lows; make sure you ALWAYS have your sugar or glucose tabs with you, or hard candy. I’m sure you do that. It can be terrifying to have a low blood sugar occur unexpectedly. Aside from the actual care which will become a habit with time, there is NOTHING you can’t do in your day to day life. In fact there are MANY things you must do now like staying active and moving around. Find the help of other diabetics because that will keep you focused and also give you a supportive ear when you need it.

i have diabetes and I hate it...I always considered my body to be a rock...I love being physical but being sapped of energy sucks...people call you lazy or you eat too much..it is just a bad pancrease...and the cells are not getting nutrition but since now i am medicated and I have my energy back and if someone says anything bad about people with difficulties I am the first to yell at em.... so on my bad sugar days when i am not so chipper watch out sometimes it could be a blessing too...I used to drink alot but never figured out why i almost got myself in a comma at the age of twenty one now I know alcohol lowers your blood sugar....

if you need to talk or get support feel free to talk with me anytime....

we can all use friends
