anything other than cold turkey is not quitting....it is just slowing down.....

i recommend 20 push ups everytime you feel like burning one

Well, I guess I'll consider myself slowed down for a whole year then since I had medicine to help me out.

What does it matter how you quit? The end result is the same regardless.

It doesn't matter. Congratulations! flowerforyou

Funny thing is, I didn't even want to quit. One of my friends asked me if I would "quit with him" so that he'd have support. He only quit for like two days, but I've been sticking with it. Oh well, I've made it this far.

i changed my patterns.

i recognized that i smoked more as a habit, than because i was addicted to the nicotine.

so i stopped going to have coffee with friends for a bit, i stopped drinking with the same buddies, and i stopped playing cards.

i put my makeup on in a different bathroom, i drove with my right hand on the wheel, rather than my left. i even changed the route of my drive home.

i also posted a copy of the list of harmful ingredients of cigarettes, along with the a copy of the benefits that occur anywhere from 15 minutes to 15 years, anywhere i could easily read it if having a craving.

good luck with it.

paper is right ...the mental addiction(habit) is harder to break than the physical....

"Your Imagination is more powerful than willpower"

You must view "yourself" as a non smoker

I'm sure it will. Those prangs that hit you where your mind goes "damn, I wish I had a smoke" pass just as fast as they come. A lot of time you just have to hit yourself with an "oh, well" and keep going. I've said "screw it, I'm not going to the convience store" a lot. I guess I've been trying to trick myself into believing it's not worth my time to go get a pack, and that I wouldn't enjoy it anyway.

I know the latter is true. While anyone that has smoked for years can tell you about the different flavors of different brands, when your actively trying to quit, the mental self disappointment of smoking throws the taste off. I bummed one from my brother last week, only smoked half of it because it tasted bad too me. Then self loathing kicked in for my lack of will power and now look at me, I'm ranting on the threads!!! Aaaagghhh!!!!! frustrated frustrated frustrated frustrated

So you see, it gets better. You've got plenty of support right here anytime you need it. If you can't find it in one thread, make a new one!!flowerforyou happy flowerforyou happy flowerforyou happy

Or take a walk. That's what I did. The minute I'd have a craving, I'd start walking really fast and think about stuff I had to do, things I finished, etc....anything, but smoking a cigarette.

it's the attempt that matters.......usually you end up out of breath and it reinforces the desire to stop the pollution of your lungs.......

now close your eyes and imagine your self doing all the normal things....with out a cig...

Helps a lot to wash everything with regular household amonia. It breaks down the nicotine so you don't breath it in in micro dust and trigger your cravings.

Ladies Home Journal said the time of month you choose to quit can increase your odds by about double. I believe that. Lot of people smoke because of stress.

I find that turning on a kitchen timer when I am trying to catch a break works as good as a cigarette with getting people to leave me alone. Of course you have to instill consequences from being disturbed when you are on "timer time" but they get the idea real fast if you pull the plug on the tv or some such thing for bothering you.

GOOD LUCK! I know you can do it; if I kicked 3paks a day anybody can.

Get lots of gum and sugarfree candy! (suckers or jolly ranchers) Best of luck to you!

Also .. avoid places where you would most want for a cigarette (bar/out to eat) for a week or so. Change your routines around.

Ditto, at the time I quit I use to cut straws up for it is the hand motion that we miss more then the cigs them self. So when I felt I needed a cig and was driving I would take out a straw the length of a cig that I had cut up. Chew on it till the urge went away and threw it away at times would hold it in my hand like a cig. hey it helped and of course the gum and sugar free hard candy. Then if at home ect would do extra cleaning or yard work when the urge hit to get my mind off of it.

It has been 6 years this coming Jan for me. Now I could care less and never have the urge anymore. It takes time and will power for awhile.

Also I would at least once a month for about the first 4 months go do something or buy something I wanted with the money I saved as a bonas for quitting. bigsmile Ohh And yes I quit cold turkey was smoking 3 packs a day!

Good Luck

Kepp up the good work, it will get easier. I promise. It's been almost 3 weeks for me and the urge to have a smoke is all but gone. The only time I really feel like one is after I wake up in the morning and have that first cup of coffee. I chew, chew, chew the heck out of cinnamon gum because it takes the urge away and and I chew the heck out of coffee stirrer straws (but that seems to be dwindling down too).

My ex-wife was a chain smoker for years. She would quit easily while pregnant with our two children, but would always pick the habit back up after giving birth and the nursing stage.

When my daughter was diagnosed with asthma, she realized she must quit for keeps. She tried every angle in the book, but what worked and is still working for her 10 years later was the cold turkey method.

She did everything the woman above being quoted has posted about changing all her usual habits around smoking. It was challenging for her (and me and the children), to say the least, but she always says that if it hadn't been that difficult for her, she would never have remembered where she crawled out of with her addiction to nicotine.

I guess sometimes we need to reflect on how bad things were for us to appreciate how wonderful things are for us now to appreciate the growth and/or successes we have made in life.

So, let's face it and be real here. Smoking is a very nasty and deadly habit. You know it, we all know it. Let the withdrawal be nasty and disgusting as well. Don't try and sugarcoat it with fads of this, that and the other.

Just do it and SUFFER! Can't we all agree we have learned more from our suffering in life?

Best of luck to you. flowerforyou
