I've used Ccleaner, Ad Aware SE, Spybot S & D, and Glary Utilites and so far they have done a very good job at keeping my computers clean of gunk.

Are there others that you'd recommend?

Awesome.

Try AVG Anti-Virus. All the nerds and geeks use it for the most part.

The only problem I have had is finding stuff that will work with a 64 bit system. Finally settled on AVG Antivirus free version. And Outpost firewall paid version because there was not a lot of choice for free firewalls for 64 bit. I must say that the paid version of outpost is rather nice. It learns when you install it and very minimal on the nag screens.

If you think about it. Every program is free for the most part.
Well, for me they are. Go ahead and pay for programs that are way too overpriced. I have AVG Pro 8 and didn't pay a dime for it.
