Fox News ticker: 'Let's hope the magic negro does a good job'

As if Americans needed any more reminders of how closely aligned with the Republican party the Fox News network is, New Year's Eve brings us this new tidbit.

During it's broadcast from New York City, the network encouraged viewers to send in text messages which, if approved by moderators, would scroll across the Fox ticker at the bottom of the screen.

Moderators, however, let this one slip: "HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C."

"Slip," meaning the comment either just 'got past' a negligent moderator, or said moderator thought it was appropriate for broadcast.

Chip Saltsman, a candidate to lead the Republican National Committee, distributed a CD to RNC members containing the parody song "Barack the Magic Negro," that has been a source of loud, public GOP infighting over the holiday season.

"The Republican Party paid a steep price for race-baiting in the presidential campaign," said the New York Times on Wednesday. "We thought after all that — and, oh yes, losing the election — everyone in the Republican Party leadership would have figured out that race-baiting alienates young, minority and all reasonable voters. Clearly, not everyone has."

"Barack the Magic Negro," which was first played on Limbaugh's radio show in March 2007, mocks Obama as being the perfect candidate for white liberals because he is not a "real" black man.

So, what is the big deal? He is black, isn't he? He does promises magic, doesn't he?

And even if he wasn't black and was totally real, still, SO What?

Who uses Negro as a word anymore?
Personally I think it just shows immaturity.

Why stop them, let them sink themselves. Better to know where one stands.

Actually "Negro" is simply "black". It does not carry any negative connotation with it. This is the word for black people in many other countries as well.

I think people need to mature. I have no racial preferences. Nor do I feel that "Negro" is offensive. Nor "White". Nor "Male", "Female" or "Child".

Besides, it was simply someone's private opinion. Why should have FOX even try to filter it out?

I say, let the people speak freely.

The mods would have caught slurs.
The last two posts was scarier than the OP.

Hmmm....you don't feel that "Negro" is offensive. Don't you think, maybe, it's because you're not black?slaphead

Another quote from a blogger, that's all you've got here. Seems like people would wise up to the bias that ANYONE on the internet can produce.

But, yes, Fox does carry a very conservative slant, and I'm glad for it. There are about 5 other stations who swing liberal, do I complain? Nope, I just turn the channel)

I am white, or Caucasian.
Now go ahead and say it. Shall I become offended?

But let's say you have called me black. What do I care?
This is something I have cared about approximately 34 years ago. "Mom,mom, she called me [insert kiddie insult here]".

Furthermore, let me offend you.

Yep. I am no fun of Bush (why is it I find myself saying it often?), but leftist channels constantly engage in borderline offensive tactics. What about all the shoe slapping pictures and games everywhere on commie-media? I think Bush might be offended.

Sooooo what. Grow up already. We can't shut everybody up, and even if we could, who's standards would we follow?

Negro is a term referring to people of Black African ancestry. Prior to the shift in the lexicon of American and worldwide classification of race and ethnicity in the late 1960s, the appellation was accepted as a normal neutral formal term both by those of Black African descent as well as non-African blacks.

Now it is often considered an ethnic slur although the term is considered archaic and is not common as a racist slur. The term is still used in some contexts for historical reasons such as in the name of the United Negro College Fund.

Modern synonyms in common use include the following:

Black
Black African
African American (in U.S.A.)

"Negro" superseded "colored" as the most polite terminology, at a time when "black" was still generally regarded as negative.

------------------------------

Fox is known for using terms they know will get a rise out of people.

Fox appeals to conservatives mostly and will always be that way, just as the Rush show appeals to those that like him and Glen Beck the same.

The fact that it might be the only conservative biased news channel might be a good thing, because I can take only so much of Fox's style of news.

I never thought that Fox was fair and balanced. But then I don't find msnbc or cnn always balanced either, and maybe that is a good thing. At least I know that I won't be confused by differing views.

I watch fox to see what their are saying about an issue, then I switch to others to see what they are saying and then make up my own mind.

I used to watch cnn and found them very bias to Bush until he started acting out, now I just find cnn a bit weird all around, I can't quite tell where they are coming from. But I do like the documentaries that cnn has, though I don't watch their main news quite as much any more.

Back to the negro word, I rarely see anyone but the very old use that word anymore. Never liked the word myself... but it always told me the general age of the person using it, and much too often their attitudes toward blacks in general that they wouldn't bother to update their use the word. some folks are stuck in the past and really don't mind being there. so be it..

Am I shocked, hell no. Am I suprised, nope. Would I like to see people be a bit more respectful. Yupper... But i never hold my breath.

One really has to be the object of such words to know the full affect of them. Some just don't care about the affect. My own family still uses that word and the other one, but then their generation is on it's way out, to be replaced by hopefully a smarter and more tolerant generation.. or may be not.

Yes, I am a white woman.

Since you're not black, you will never be any to comprehend what black people feel when they are called different names.
It is more then "insert kiddie insult here".

Just wanted to post at eye level. This thread is based on a blogger's report, not factual against Fox, and therefore really has no basis for continuing.

On a lighter note) I like black people, and I'm from the south, and my kids never heard the "n" word as a child, to the point that they actually called them brown people up until around age 9. It was cute)
