Is there really anything to be gained by seeking to be popular on an internet site?

Sincere question here...

Well you could then open your own Blog and become outrageiously popular and then have advertisers pay to put their product on your site yeah.

hhmmmmm yes and no.

as for being popular, it could just be a vainity thing for the person.

However, in an online community like this one, the more people you know, the more likely to find someone. Because if someone has good things to say about you, someone else is more likely to contact you. but in the opposite, if people only have bad or vague things to say about you, they are less likely to contact you. If that made any sense laugh

Does that actually happen on sites like this one?

Meh. It's just like real life. From time to time, I occasionally see people I went to high school with -- the jocks and preppies and "popular" people (at the time) -- and now, they're bald, or overweight, or drunks, or have 20 kids, or divorced, ad infinitum....or any combination of the aforementioned. I never cared to be popular, just recognized.

I can see how the forums expose you to a lot of folks.
In my case, it's not much help,if any, because of the distance thing.

I don't know that you would actually gain anything from it but it would in fact show others a side of you they may want to get to know.

I would not think that this site or similiar sites would be the best vehicle for that type of success but your question was a general one and not specific to this site. At least the way i read it.

self acknowledgement from the group of people you know is all it is... better known as "cliques"..... I have noticed the same people ( for the most part) being nicer to each other thenthey are to "outsiders" personally like the King & Queen thing that just recently ran? same people not to say anything bad about it.. But they all know each other very well been here for some time in most cases.... oh well.. good thing I loike myself and have good self esteem...lol

I refuse to become popular. I don't want the paparazzi following me to my house, neither I want to see myself on the front page of the tabloids in Stop&Shop. Really I spend most of my time to stay unpopular. tongue2

well i'm supposing that if you want to date, the more well-liked you are, the better your chances of finding someone that interests and attracts you.

maybe the ones that do live close don't participate in the threads but rather gnome only and read what you say and how you get along with others?

maybe that alone would attract someone enough to write?

I don't believe there is, but the forums give us a chance to see how people are.

I actually talk to more people who aren't even on the forums. I rarely get messages from people on the forums unless I initiate it.
