When you're talking to or meeting someone for the first time...do you ask them what went wrong with their past relationships? Do you really expect them to say "I was a jerk...it's all my fault...!" What do you say when they ask you that inevitable question? Just wonderin'...

I can't even get a guy to tell me what he does for a living...let alone anything about his past relationships.

I don't ask the first time we talk or meet. If they're an azz, I can figure that out. If the question becomes pertinent later on then I'll ask and assume I'm not getting the whole story.

I don't ask. It's none of my business. When I am asked, I'd personally rather not discuss it either, and I like to have my privacy respected as well as they do. Not that I have anything to hide, but it's in the past. The past is the past for a reason, just like an ex is an ex for a reason, whatever those reasons may be. Let it go. The past is really irrelevant, and if the past isn't important, I'd rather not dwell on it or create reasons for possible contention. I'd rather look forward to a new future.

Over time, things will come out about the past if they are relevant or important. I personally don't think it's necessary to dump the whole bushel basket out all at one time, because that's just asking for trouble. If certain things are not important, it's not even worth the trouble of bringing them up again.

I agree...besides, how accurate is the story gonna be anyway? What happened with one person might not happen with another...

I don't ask, no. I do listen for warning phrases ("I only hit her those three times; she made more money than me, the money-hungry bioch; she had this disgusting little dog that mysteriously disappeared one day").

wow...that would seem to be pretty serious and heavy conversation for the first meeting or the first conversation...

I guess I would want to talk about other things during the first conversation...whether on the phone or in person...

could be just me...
