Investigators smuggle live bomb components into federal building — in 27 seconds

By John Byrne

Published: July 8, 2009

A Government Accountability Office investigator smuggled live bomb components into a federal building in just 27 seconds, then assembled a bomb in a restroom and ventured throughout the building without being detected, a leaked tape revealed Wednesday.

In addition, congressional investigators were able to penetrate every single federal building they probed without any difficulty — 10 in all.

A shocked Senate Homeland Security Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-CT) went off on the news in an article Wednesday by ABC News.

“It’s stunning. It’s shocking,” Lieberman quipped. “It just says that basically some people have forgotten the lessons of 9/11.”

A division of the Homeland Security Department is supposed to protect some 9,000 federal buildings across the United States. Fifteen thousand of their employees are private contractors, the network said.

The Federal Protective Service, a part of the Department of Homeland Security, is responsible for securing more than 9,000 federal buildings and, among other employees, utilizes 15,000 contract security guards.

“The GAO has been investigating the service since 2007 for a wide range of reported problems, and says it found serious vulnerabilities during visits to the 10 buildings,” the network noted. “ABC News obtained videos and images from the GAO investigation. Investigators are slated to publish their latest findings in a report later this summer, but Lieberman’s staff said he found the information compiled so troubling that he scheduled a hearing for today.”

“Just think about it. In this case, in this GAO test, ten different federal buildings in different cities in the country were all compromised,” Lieberman is quoted as saying in the report. “If a terrorist group just did that in two or three federal buildings, it would not only really hurt some people; it would create a real crisis of confidence here in the United States about our homeland security.”

Homeland Security released a tepid statement to the network’s reporters, saying the department “is committed to providing government facilities and employees with a first class security force. The Federal Protective Service (FPS) is charged with that critical mission and DHS takes the concerns raised in the forthcoming GAO report very seriously.”

More details on the bomb tests are available here.

This video is from ABC’s Good Morning America, broadcast July 8, 2009.

Yeah, but there's no way anyone could ever smuggle bombs and/or demolition grade thermate into the WTC... naa...

I read about this earlier in another article. Apparently they were able to do this in all 10 buildings they tried. That's lovely.

Yes. Just think if the confidence was shaken...what if people find out about this?!? *wipes the dripping sarcasm off my keyboard*

so, obviously Mr. Lieberman does not think that any confidence or trust will be shaken by the release of this information....whoa whoa whoa

I mean those that did trust Homeland Security measures...

on the other hand...Thank God that people take off their shoes prior to boarding a plane!!!

and that you can only carry on 3oz. bottles of liquids...AND they have to be in a zip loc baggie...(like a dime bag size)

We all know the real terroists are 6 year old boys who "just want to visit gramma", old black women in wheelchairs, and veterans. If we dare take our "resources" off finding and detaining these criminals we stand to lose so much more than protecting our federal buildings! scared frustrated

yep some do not get it

it was a staged investigation to create fear and concern

thus for the theft of more civil liberties

no matter how much security you have

there will be a way to breach it

after all if you have bomb making materials and if only 1 piece is brought in at a time do you think they would figure it out (i doubt it)

all the security in the world is not worth your freedoms

True story about our Homeland Security.

Last February, I went down to Houston to meet up with a bunch of friends...it happened to be my birthday and one of my very dear friends from Texas gave me a picture frame.

The frame was made out of old barn wood, had glass over the opening, and an old spur, some old barbed wire, and a REPLICA of a six shooter on the front of it.

I debated about whether to put this in my suitcase or not because I could only imagine what the person would do when they saw this go through the x-ray machine!! so, I decided to carry it on...OMG!!scared

I TOLD them at the x-ray machine about the frame PRIOR to running it through...I TOLD the person at the metal detector gate walk through...I TOLD them that I wanted to make sure that they KNEW the gun was a replica...oops

BIG MISTAKE ...BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE!!

I heard the person behind the belt xray calling into the walkie talkie for back up...I saw the guards coming with their hands on their guns...

I was detained...I tried to explain that the gun was NOT real...and that I WANTED to show the picture frame to security so that they would not think I was trying to hide it....OMG!! WRONG!!!

They asked me if I had any bullets for the gun...noway BULLETS??? The gun is NOT real...and I told them NO, I do NOT have any REPLICA bullets to go in the REPLICA gun that is ATTACHED to the picture frame and is not REAL!!! There are NO bullets...not any real ones or any fake ones...frustrated

They told me that I would NOT be able to bring the picture frame on board because the gun "looked" real enough that the other passengers might get scared...

I told them that the gun was attached to the frame...what was I going to do...wave the whole friggen frame around??? whoa

ok...then can the flight attendant keep it in a closet for me until we land...they do that sometimes for people...NOPE!!

I could ship it home for about $120.00...

I had to get a hold of my friend and have them come to the airport and pick up the frame and ship it to me for $20 via UPS...

It just seems to me ..... if our security measures are so lax that this can be done, and it hasn't happened, then why are we enslaved by a Patriot Act that strips us of our freedoms and rights in the name of that security, which we obviously aren't getting, and apparently don't need?

Seems to me it's a case of the "cat being out of the bag" with a truth revealed they are simply fearmongering us into submission and giving up our rights, rather than one of even more security needed!

More people die of cancer, accident or alcohol abuse than by terrorist attack. The wars we were placed in, under lies we were told, is killing many thousands more.... I think our leaders are making the terrorists envious with their body counts in the name of "security" and the "never ending war on terror"! I think we have made our point "Don't tread on me!" and to continue OUR ACTIONS, causing countless civilian deaths and oppression of foreign peoples in these wars makes us no better than those we have blamed for the same acts.

I must ask..... what makes our actions against these foreign peoples any more righteous if we continue. It is time they took the reins in their own countries, decide their own fates, not what we dictate by oppression, superior firepower, and the cost of more American lives! Let's also not forget to mention the trillions of dollars being spent by our government to maintain the war machine corporations instead of closing that hole in our economy and helping our own people!

I believe we need a strong military and an adaquate defense budget for "PREVENTION" not war! This article PROVES that! We also need to take the security of our nation out of "PRIVATE INTREST" (CORPORATE) hands (they have shown the lack of concern for our welfare by their ineptitude!) AND PUT IT BACK INTO THE HANDS OF OUR MILITARY....

BRING OUR BRAVE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN HOME WHERE THEY BELONG!

Statistically speaking, you have a better chance of dying via bee stings and lightning strikes, but Government has found a way to keep the sheep pounding the pedals that allow these travesties that will render our Constitution meaningless.

I'll call my friends at the Fed, they'll print you up anything you need... as long as you have the right connections and stand for Globalism.

laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

A local gym started to thumb print everyone. I was one of the very few people who refused, and the desk attendants were very displeased with me because they'd have to push a button to let me in.

One day, one of the thug-like employees addressed me (as 'dog'), pulled me aside and said, in a hushed voice "I know how you feel, I've got a record, too. So I looked in the computer, and they don't have no prints in there!".

So..... if you refuse to be fingerprinted, suddenly everyone logically concludes must have a criminal history! Lovely!

<==== Has no criminal history.
