I was having an interesting conversation with my father recently. We were sitting around the back table having a few drinks (as we do most days) and we got to talking about drugs. I've got a very open family so both my mum and dad know I do Ketamine, pot and E and we all drink. We got onto the topic of drinking and he said that he considers himself an alcoholic, but it's not a problem.

Now, this is his definition of alcoholic. Someone who drinks every day or needs to drink every day. Now he and I both land in this group. In fact I'm enjoying my second scotch while typing this, have had 2 cans of JB&Coke and will probably go on to have 1 or 2 more scotchs after this one is finished. I do this every night of the week, but, like my father, I don't consider it a problem. Why?

Because I can afford it and it's not changing my lifestyle. I can afford my bottle of fine scotch ever fortnight and a case of beer to go with it and I can still afford everything else, my board, my travel, it's all in the green.

So, how would you define the word "alcoholic"? Does your definition change is you're talking about illegal drugs?

Let the discussion begin.

You defined alcoholic already, it has conflicting definitions as it has multiple uses. Reminds me of a saying "You can paint **** a pretty color...but it is still ****". Pretty much, what you are doing is harming you both physically and emotionally and you can validate it by whichever word you would like but in the end it will inevitably probably kill you and your mind.

Cossack Drinking Song

If we drink we shall die,
if we don't drink we shall die
So we might as well say what the hell
and raise our glasses high!
Whatever your name
you'll be dying just the same.
So you might as well say what the hell
and join us in a drink - hey!drinker

My intention wasn't to paint it prettily. Yea alcohol can kill, and I smoke too. So my body isn't a temple and it's probably taking years off my life, I know the dangers and I've weighed them up. I'm comfortable with this.

Strange that someone with the name Fear and Loathing would be against binging, what Hunter S built his career on...

but anyway, the topic isn't about me or my Dad. It's how you'd define the word, not what I do. We all know it's self destructive.

its all about damage
drinking everyday is considered to be addicted
but is it from teatime, dinnertime, breakfast
i personally wait till after teatime to drink and smoke pot
as i dont wanna damage my health too much
but on the flip side those nights i dont drink
i feel quite bored and a little stressed out
and im sure stress kills just as much as a few pints
and spliffs every night

Never said I was against binging, used to do it a lot. Now I suffer the health complications from it, so I can't do it anymore. Do whatever you want but don't justify it with:

"Because I can afford it and it's not changing my lifestyle. I can afford my bottle of fine scotch ever fortnight and a case of beer to go with it and I can still afford everything else, my board, my travel, it's all in the green."

It was just a comparison to a destructive alcoholic. When something ruins your life it should be stopped. When it puts you in debt, leads you to stealing or down any of those roads then you are someone who needs help. Alcoholic in a severely negative sense.

Nevermind anyway :)

Addiction to anything is negative, regardless of what it is. :)

but does that mean abstaining from everything is positive???

a man who makes no mistakes makes nothing...

and everything is subject to interpretation and personal values. I think religion is negative, it's like an addiction to invisible friends.

Anyway, my motto has always been "Everything in moderation, especially moderation"

I'm a nihilist, it really doesn't matter to me...I simply don't care, I just have my point of view. We live and die, and pay taxes. I just didn't care for the pain that drinking that much put me in, suppose it was a comfort option?

Nice opposition, saying something in opposition to something that wasn't even said...real intelligent.

I don't drink because I find it unnecessary, by the way I'm not one of those people who TALK- TALK and have never experience what they preach. shades

I was raised in PR in as time where there was no such thing as day care, at least not close to my home. My dad always told me to stay in the house not only because it was inappropriate but because he didn't want social services catching me in the bar bigsmile but I was a child and I got bored! The bar was in a room attached to the house it was a live bar that was opened until late night and I was all day and all night surrounded by drunk people and they were my friends. I learn how to play dominoes with drunken older people. I also learn how to play pool and how to attend a bar at 9 or 10 years old bigsmile

I'm serious. Probably because my friends were older people that's the reason why I am so knowledgeable.

By the way there is nothing funnier than a drunk comedian! They are so funny because they laugh they're *** off and you're like "Huh??" but is so funny that they are laughing that you feel like WTF is he laughing about laugh

Anyway I took my first drink hidden from my father like at 9, 10 or 11 years old. I did it because I thought it was funny to go against the rules. Then I never drank until I was like 16 when I started drinking again and I left it because I found it that it was unnecessary and it made no difference in my life drinking or not.

Anyway.. Alcoholism is wrong if you're one of those who drink until he can't even walk, If you drink and become violent, gay rofl or if you're irresponsible enough to drive intoxicated. bigsmile

My thought.

Alcholism is a problem! Being an alcoholic will win over well with the ladies NOT. I wish you the best of luck.
