In 2002, Volkswagen designed a concept car that could go 100 kilometers on 1 liter of fuel, equivalent to about 235 mpg. This year, Volkswagen shows off the second generation of the 1 liter concept, the L1, with the intention of production by 2013. Using an extremely light and aerodynamic body and a diesel-electric parallel hybrid power train, the new L1 falls short of its fuel efficiency goal, requiring 1.38 liters of diesel to cover 100 kilometers, or 170 mpg. Still, not bad

Terrible performance numbers....with a price tag ( I am guessing ) that is going to make it almost completely unreasonable to buy.

That sure is a cool looking car. One problem though - I don't like VWs.

I love them, I'm just partial to the original one. Both the bus and the car.

The only problem I have with these little tiny fuel efficient cars is where do I put my kids, and how do I tow my boat.
Am I supposed to give those things up to stop our dependancy on foreign oil and stop global warming.

the majority of the cars propulsion comes from an electric motor and the gas engine kicks in when the charge on the motor drops

the initial charging of the batteries for the electric motor comes from plugging it in at night

the electricity to charge it comes from (usually) coal fired plants. so its not that environmentally friendly

I don't know if the cost of the electricty to charge it offsets the cost of gas

Well you are right there. I had a yellow volkswagen, until I got two labrador pups about 7 months old and left them in the car to get a perscription filled for them. I came back out and they had eaten the two front seats, except for the wire under the material and foam...

Later on I had a bus, loved that thing, wish I had it now.

I think these are the sporty version, not meant for a family car. Don't they have trucks that are efficient yet?
