Yes, when I worked with a trainer he would encourage me to have food. I'm a vegetarian so I would do the protein..if you are a meat eater have that. A healthy salad with a chicken breast..something like that.

After years of runway modeling in Milan, I have found that most top models prefer a light meal of low fat treats such as cocaine and cigarettes! "They" also go on to claim that it boosts your metabolism and has very little to no calories! So you can pretty much enjoy, guilt free! biggrin

avoid anything with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). I usually have some fruit or veggies after a workout myself, and almonds if I can.

I read somewhere, recently, that a good recovery drink is 8 oz. of chocolate milk. It has a good balance of protein, calories and carbs along with the Vit. A and D and calcium, and is much cheaper than a protein drink.

Drink it and eat a bannana and that should hold you over until you can make it to your next meal.

Other than that, just eat healthy. (Lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, lo fat, whole wheat breads and pasta, avoid junk food and drink, etc.)

I'm been working out steady since i was a teen and came across a lot of good ideas about nutrition and working out. On days you workout it's best to not eat for min. two hours prior to workout or simply workout first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. During a workout your will crave energy, calories, to provide the body the fuel it needs--but without any food/drinks to feed off, your body will turn to your bodyfat for the calories, thus burning some serious fat.
After your workout your muscles are screaming for nutrients so immediately after your workout drink a high grade isolate protein shake with, if desired, real fruits and mixed with water - or, i don't drink milk, but rather almond milk. With this you never have to feel feel guilty and hungry.

With all due respect you couldn't be more wrong, first let me adress the O/P's question. The reason you are hungry after an intense workout is because you have dramatically increased your metabolic rate. Depending if you are trying to lose weight or gain muscle then what you should be eating afterwards comes into play. A protein shake with some fast acting carbs is a good idea for a muscle building plan as it causes an insulin boost allowing more protein into your muscles when catabolism is at it's highest. Waxy Maize Starch is great, fruit can be used too, but fruit contains a sugar called fructose. That is the only carb that doesn't replinish muscle glycogen storage. Now if you are planning on getting very lean, then you may opt for protein shake and some good fats such as Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a quarter of Avacoda, etc. or just a protein shake alone, alot of variables here depending on your bodyfat, and goals.

Oh and before you doubt I know my stuff here, feel free to look into my profile.

Yes, cottage cheese is good protein because it stays in your system longer. Also sends signals to your brain that you shouldn't be hungry. Just don't get carried away and eat too much as that would be self defeating.

I like yogurt before or after. Just seems to be
easily digestible and light.

As some have already mentioned, protein shakes are usually a favorite after lifting weights. As far as what to eat to feed your hunger, I would suggest protein and fiber. They both fill you up and keep you full for a longer period. Fibers keep you full without that calories that you MAY NOT need (depending on if you're trying to gain weight or not).

Proteins are ideal for consumption, if you can get lean please do so, such as chicken, beef, salmon, pork, turkey, nuts, etc. Do not confuse nuts as high quality protein. They are great protein sources, however, they also contain natural fats/oil that are good for you but not in excessive amts so consume moderately.

Yogurt is fine to eat. Do keep in mind that a lot of yogurt has sugar in them! Avoid the kinds that you have to mix in order to get the fruit/syrup at the bottom!

However, may I suggest another alternative for your pre and post workout meal? Try eating half an apple with a pb&j sandwich 30min - 1 hr prior to exercising. If your goal is to shed some lbs, do cardio the 1st thing in the morning on an empty stomach but don't over do it b/c you may faint or black out!

as far as after workout, eat something with carbs and protein.

I usually work out after work so nothing before, and for dinner lean protein and veggies. I've been told by fitness professionals it is best to get some protein in your system asap after a good work out.

DRINK water! Our minds can trick us into thinking we are hungry when really we are thirsty.

Blind leading the blind here ^^^^^^^ Stick to a subj. you might know something about!

After working out you should be hungry, it means you put a good amount of stress on the body and you need to eat protein right away to get the amino acids into your body. This is not the time to drink water, it's a good time to get your lean protein in and some carbs or essential fatty acids.
