 The day has finally come for KFC's gluttonous Double Down sandwich to premier, and we were among the first in line to test it this morning (yes, we were eating this sandwich at 10:45 a.m.). The Double Down (also available with grilled chicken) consists of two boneless Original Recipe Filets, two strips of bacon, two slices of Monterey Jack and pepperjack cheese and a special Colonel's Sauce. The complete review after the jump. KFC's Double Down Sandwich Grade: B Nutritional Info: 540 calories, 32 grams fat,1380 mgs sodium This sandwich isn't for the faint of heart. The sodium intake alone will knock you off your feet: Our testers determined the salty culprit seemed to be the breading on the chicken, though it was pleasingly crispy and the meat itself was quite moist. The bacon was legit -- it didn't have the usual weirdly chewy, artificial bacon-bit taste -- but it was essentially lost, both physically and flavor-wise (along with the cheese), between the two behemoth chicken filets. And there was a lot of discussion around whether the cheese was really a cheese spread, or if it had just melded with the special sauce. The verdict: with a complete bite of chicken, cheese, bacon and sauce, this sandwich really isn't bad. While we probably wouldn't order another (unless you're really jonesing for a salt fix), we happily finished off the one we bought. We can foresee this becoming the new "hangover food" of choice. Anyways, would you eat this? in my opinion it looks good,but all that sodium?!! maybe not worth it |

Be stiil mah hawt ... holy jesus in the promised land, this looks SO good ... I had no idea that KFC had finally decided to enter the Promised Land of Food-A-Plenty ... Calories? Sodium? Is that even relevant? Nuh-unh. Does it TASTE good? THAT's relevant. Is it value for money? Looks and sounds like it to me ... this could easily become my 'stand-by' food of choice for when I can't get the best burger ever made my a commercial food supplier, 'The Whopper' by BK ... ain't no other burger that can beat it - some come close, but it's still the flava king ... why'd I say that? I HATE that damned BK 'king' - it creeps me out ... I think I'm gonna swing by KFC here today and see if they have this wonderful li'l item on their menu now ... if they do, I'm a-gettin' me one ... Thanks for the heads-up on this fantastic piece of culinary informativeness ...

I have seen that ad on TV already. I would like to try the grilled version. I am not to keen on KFC crispy coating on the chicken. The grilled version should cut down on the salt somewhat.

Just finished eating my very first Double Down ... it will NOT be my last ...
O. M. G. ... How to describe this ... ? 'Wonderful'? Naah. 'Tasty'? Naaah. 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'? Naaah. Damned good chicken? Oh yeahhhhhh ... First thing that caught my attention was ... NO BUN ... ! Yay! That means I don't have to worry about all those excess carbohydrates from 'white bread' sources. That's automatically a huge plus/plus/plus. So: We have totally exposed, perfectly fried, BUN-less Chicken Filets ACTING as its own bun - what a marvelous concept ... ! On the inside we got the REAL (nope, it's not turkey) BACON, a great sauce (could be a bit less, but what the hell), and REAL cheese ... btw, I checked with the store's manager about those very points (bacon and cheese) after reading the initial review here, and I'm happy to report that everything is GEN-U-WINE ... no 'cheese spread', no 'turkey bacon'. This WILL be my 'new fallback' position food. When I don't feel like makin' the drive to BK for a Whopper, THIS is what's gonna be in my hand. There's an additional benefit - KFC is closer to the house than BK, so this could reasonably become my NEW favorite and the Whopper could be the 'fallback'. As for the 'too salty' consideration ... ? Nope. Exactly right. The little bit of 'pepper heat' is perfectly balanced and gives a quick initial hit with a nice cool-down afterward ... the smokiness of the bacon balances nicely with the 'Colonel's Sauce' and the cheese - and then there's the chicken ... there aren't enough words to say how absolutely perfect this thing is. I don't think I'm ever gonna let that 'grilled' version come close to me - it'd be too much of a letdown ... In conclusion: Daaaaaaaaaaamn. What a great little food product. I am so glad you gave us a heads-up on this one ... |

I could live off this. I'd rather die happy and eat what I like, then starve myself for some superficial reason... Granted, if you eat healthy you live longer, but I have no desire to live forever.

The term 'slightly less deadly' ... it's all relative, right ... ? I mean, we're all gonna die one day ... I've had a heart attack - I know what it is ... I'm the proud owner of three stents, and yes, I work out AND (despite this lapse) try to eat relatively healthy ... So, with all that in mind, I'm stickin' with the stuff that tastes absolutely great - like this ... If it was the only thing we ate, well, yeah, that'd be on the road to Artery Clog City, but once in a while ... ? Nope, ain't gonna hurt when done in moderation ... and hell, I just may break down and try the grilled version too - just so I have a valid baseline for comparison ... I'm still glad you put the review up for this ...
Oh. About that 'sodium content': one gram of sodium = .035 ounces ... just for grins and comparison for those who worry about such things ... read the labels on the frozen dinners (like Boston Market, for example) in the grocery and see how much higher THOSE are than this ... it's all relative ... |

I agree, I dont eat strictly for health reasons but also for enjoyment. I just dont think this particular entree looks like it would taste good (Im not big on pork, bacon,,etc,,) |

I need clarification please... Is it best eaten like a burger? or with forks & knives? It looks wonderful... Dirty Bird always has a special place in my heart but this beats a bucket of Pigeon anyday.
