Would you be willing to do something very unsatisfying for five years (for example, clean toilets) if you were certain that the experience would afterwards bring you a deep sense of personal fulfillment for the rest of your life?

I don't think I could do something I hate for that long. Of course, I'm not a parent. I think someone with children could do something they hate for at least 22 years, if it gave them the satisfaction of knowing they created a better life for their child.

When it comes down to it, people will generally do whatever is necessary to survive.

If it doesn't give me that sense now, I don't see how it could ever.

Depends on the fringe benefits. For instance, if I could get paid to scrub toilets at the Playboy mansion... I think that would give me quite a bit of fulfillment. :D

I know that was just an example, and this wasn't supposed to be thread about toilets, but I'm just sayin: i actually cleaned toilets for a living for a while, and I found my work and my life to be satisfying. Its all in how you relate to yourself, not in what you do.

As far as the real question, though....

would it be a good thing to be satisfied for the rest of your life? is there value in needing to rediscover satisfaction, to stay motivated, active, alive? if i was completely satisfied for the rest of my life...would i start playing video games like 14 hours a day?
