Or make fire without a lighter, or purify water,or find food,
Etc,etc
I think the withdrawals from tech would leave them dumbfounded, this is where we'd see the most reversion to dark age thinking

we existed for how many thousands of year before all that stuff? i think we can manage

Existed, yes. But, I'm not so sure I would want to live in some of the conditions my ancestors did.

awww, come on, give it a try....

No. I like my indoor toilet. :tongue:

I have no problem going in the woods......but I do carry tp though

slaphead I think one would just be smarter knowing what poison oak, and ivy looked like so one didn't use those leaves to wipe their arse. Anything else should be good.

Fire, not a problem...have made heaps of fires the indigenous way...friction still works irrespective of technological advances..

Condensation is still an effective form of water collection/creation...and with my lighter-less created fire, I can boil water to purify.

Food...I have the bush skills, again thanks to indigenous australians...and the plentiful bird, fish and wildlife around me....(for my omnivore children)...I KNOW I can survive without electricity, and technology, I did it for 13 years whilst raising four young children.

...and the bottom wiping/ablution side of things...?

..paperbark...melaleuca is perfect...for the err cleaning of pooey bottoms...and we have a native tree that grows by freshwater that acts very much like soapwort...although I also know how to make soap from woodash and animal fat...bigsmile

Ahhh yes but the stores will still be there for a while and things like tp don't go bad I do know how to hunt bleed out and gut an animal clean and gut a fish.....and make a fire...boil water caught in rain etc.......bring it on...and others will have to learn from those that know how

In my travels I have found a better use for TP (in a modern 'survival' situation). Given the lack of maintenance eventually we will have radiation leaks from many things.

A roll of TP with the center cardboard taken out makes an excellent filter for an air purifier (it even removes radioactive particles) when attached to piping and a hand bellows.

I have carried a magnifer since I was a kid. As long as there is sun you have a means of fire.

What you will likely see around stores and other sources of 'resources' are folks with guns and a list of who can and who can't access those resources.

Really because all rules fly out the window and there are gun and ammo stores too.....magnfying glasses etc in an all out black and destruction type event regular rules and convention no longer exist in survial modes

Most likely.......those without basic survival skills..yeah I agree.......those raide in the country and taught to farm hunt and fish....I think they would make it.......

I beg to differ on that...
Take technology away from modern day people and see how fast their minds revert to dark age thinking.....
I personally think at least half of our population wouldn't know the first thing about surviving

Knowing how to survive without technology would do no good initially. The population of technologically advanced countries tends to be concentrated in the urban areas.

The mass exodus of those people would be like swarms of locust, consuming whatever was available along the way to more rural and fertile pastures. Finding areas large enough, fertile, temperate, enough and with sufficient clean and available water supply would be a problem because we would still have to have the seeds to grow sufficient quantities to feed those who need the land. We could not accomplish this because the population of many of the countries, referred to, far exceed the carrying capacity of their land.

That's one major reason why the loss of technology (loss of mobility for transport) would result in the loss of huge portions of the population – not because we lack survival skills.

*loads gun* i wanna help

Perfect example of returning to dark age thinking – that is, not thinking. People would shoot on sight anyone perceived to be trespassing on squatted land.

Without the diversity of knowledge that can only exist in large groups of people – shooting to guard a peasants way of life is self-destructive, you may be shooting the people whose combined knowledge could benefit a great many people including yourself.

The book/ movie The Stand by Stephen King does a good job of examining this issue – if we shoot to kill we could be taking the lives of those we love and mean to protect by denying them a doctor, dentist, geologist, or people more adept in survival techniques. Or those with ideas we may not have considered.

Really because all rules fly out the window and there are gun and ammo stores too.....magnfying glasses etc in an all out black and destruction type event regular rules and convention no longer exist in survial modes

Our survival does not depend on our ability to destroy others, it depends on our willingness to work together and the downside will be what it has always been, to meet this end of working together we must accept those who cannot do for themselves.

Ahhh yes but the stores will still be there for a while and things like tp don't go bad I do know how to hunt bleed out and gut an animal clean and gut a fish.....and make a fire...boil water caught in rain etc.......bring it on...and others will have to learn from those that know how

Carrying loads of canned and boxed goods would be difficult as we exit the urban areas where stores are abundant – the choice would be, as suggested above, to take more long term survival gear but guns and ammunition are heavy and would limit our progress as we travel – not to mention that we would often be using those weapons against others – those ‘dark age thinkers’ described above, and not as much for procuring food.

I bet half the population would die off in 6 months time

When we consider the following statistics: In the United States alone, (reference CDC sources)

* Number of adults with vision trouble: 19.4 million
• Percent of adults with vision trouble: 8.6%
• Number of adults with any physical functioning difficulty:
35.6 million
• Percent of adults with any physical functioning difficulty:
• 16% The elderly 85 and older are 1 percent (3,625,000
people) of the total population;
• The elderly population, ages 65-74 is 7 percent (18,759,000
people) of the total population;
• 1,813,665 total nursing facility beds;
• Approximately 13% of children have a developmental disability, ranging from mild disabilities such as speech and language impairments to serious developmental disabilities, such as intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, and autism.

These people and those who love them, will be most likely to stay put and stock pile canned and boxed goods. But they are also the most likely to be killed first as they compete for the limited supplies.

Limited access to pharmaceuticals and the proper use of them will account for many more deaths.

I think your estimate may be low.

I have to agree...the probable cause of a modernized dark age could very well be linked to the failure of technology considering how much we all depend on it. However, even though bibical plagues and prophets say so; does not neccessarily mean it to be. We must make of it what we will. Yet, again taking that notion, I feel as though the round about time deal isn't far to be held. Thanks to the new and approved government socialist...we all shall prepare for change.Everyone should bow down and take their beatings in order for the old world to return; so to say by their communism ways. And to concluded the failure of technology comes the failure of our economy, our foundation, our freedom and so on.

Can you say anarchy??? Look at what happens when a hurricane, earthquake, tornado or avalanche happens. Unintelligent people revert right back to their animal instincts of me first and that is exactly what would happen on a global scale. Those who are intelligent will be able to handle the inconvenience but those who are unintelligent will commit animalistic atrocities on others who are weaker, this will show everybody right off the bat who the predators are.

Personally, I have absolutely no wish to survive when society collapses permanantly.

Society will not collapse. It will simply change state. Civilization as we know it will alter drastically.

Some people will become useless dross. (especially those that expect others to provide for them).

Others will simply keep on living.

Life is.

I agree. there isn't much of interest that far back. In fact we have hardly started to be interesting now. And I don't think we should consider the dark-ages as something that will arrive after our science does this or that to the earth. The dark ages before existed without that. My worry is that we are already entering a new dark- ages. To me they signify ignorance. The 20th century can hardly be called enlighting. World wars and the crushing of thinking opposition. Although science does help in many ways; desease, food- supply, transport, radio, etc, it doesn't help socially much. Social development depends on a different sort of science. The 21st Century, remember, is the aftermath of the 20th Century barbarism. We seem to forget that people in the dark ages weren't aware of it being the dark ages. That is, of course, where most of the problem begins. Thank god for musik and literature!
