I absolutely agree with the op of this forum. Too many times our military men and women are forgotten, Memorial Day is looked up as the beginning of barbecues, instead of marking the many lives taken for our freedom.

If the Mingle2 mediators don't do something about this, i there a way that we as members. could do something about this?

Thank you to all our troops, men and women.

General John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said he still doesn’t know why at least 10 NATO troops have died in the last two weeks at the hands of the Afghan forces they mentor. He suspects it may have something to do with asking those Afghans to perform dangerous operations during the recent Muslim holy month. Maybe.

During the past several weeks, Afghan forces have turned their guns on the U.S. troops that mentor them with increasing frequency. The Afghan troops have killed at least 40 U.S. and allied forces this year, the most since the war began, and Karzai’s government insists the blame lies with Pakistani infiltrators, not Afghans themselves. Allen diplomatically said he was “looking forward to the Afghans providing us with the intelligence” they’re using to reach that conclusion.

But beyond that, Allen said his staff was still studying why the attacks have increased. One possible contributing factor: the holy month of Ramazan, which most of the Muslim world calls Ramadan. Although Ramazan is an annual event, it doesn’t occur at the same time annually on the western calendar, and this year it fell during the summer fighting season. The “daily pressures” of war and the “sacrifices associated with fasting,” especially with a larger and newer force of Afghan recruits, may have contributed to some Afghan forces snapping. When Danger Room pressed Allen on the role Ramazan may have played in the so-called “green-on-blue” attacks, Allen clarified that he wasn’t blaming Ramazan exclusively, and that U.S. forces working with Afghan units tried to time their operations closer to the mornings and evenings, so fasting Afghans wouldn’t be overly taxed.

Ha. Out here our Veteran's day is just a holiday so people can do their Christmas shopping as they just don't care about the Vets. Only a few stores will pay their respects and shut down their stores.

While I see only giving Veteran's discounts or at least the really BIG discounts I don't see putting anyone out of work for the day. Especially when being out of work often hurts returning vets or the families that depend on civilian members being employed.

I do think it is important for Veteran's (and their supporters) to vote with retailers by spending their dollars where they are shown appreciation.

And if you see a Veteran being discriminated against in employment, houseing, whatever saying/doing something about it.

Well, if what you say is true; why do we close stores at Christmas? Isn't that also putting people out of work for the day? Fact is only the big retail stores stay open while most retail stores do close out of respect. I have found a few stores are now opening on Christmas day but only for a few hours. So, I suppose most people look at Veteran's day as nothing much like I look at Christmas day as nothing. Guess it all equals itself out in the long run.

War veterans honor 9/11 victims by displaying giant flag

In a ceremony hosted by military veterans Saturday, perhaps the only thing bigger than the American flag unfurled on the slopes of Cannon Mountain was the pride felt by those who put it there.

Members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association unfurled a 45-by-90-foot World War II commemorative flag on the slope of Cannon Mountain as part of a ceremony, in memory of those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Blue Angels
The Blue Angels is the United States Navy's flight demonstration squadron.
The mission of the Blue Angels is to enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting, and credibly represent Navy and Marine Corps aviation to the United States and its Armed Forces to America and other countries.

We have the same problem here which is why we work hand in hand with the Veteran's affair and the Veteran's food bank. My Valentine's gift was to drop off a load of food for our hungry vets. They deserve better than to be homeless and hungry. JMO

A special Valentine's Hug for all our Active Duty military and Veteran's and their families. You are Greatly appreciated.

In your honor seven ageing frail Veteran's in my community were given a comprehensive yard makeover. Trash was removed, weeds were pulled, plants were trimmed, and existing planters were repaired and filled with living easy care plants.

Hopeing other's on tight budgets but wanting to make a real difference will duplicate this "Garden Angel" effort; if even on a small scale.

In the spring before the weeds really kick in it can really make the difference in keeping ageing veteran's or their widows being able to live independently.

While resources exist for in home support services there are not existing services that provide this out door maintenace assistance in the majority of communities.

Summer is coming soon and for lower ranking (paid) military families even retireies pitch hitting raiseing grands that are already struggleing to make ends meet the abscence of school lunches, even school hour periods for waiting wives to work can affect real hardships. Especially when they often live off post and away from supporting families. If you know a military family and can offer car pooling, free or reduced day care, share garden produce, or just include them in community activiites and food events without embarassing them you can make a huge difference. Many military installations have daycare co-ops, recreation programs, and thrift shops that you can donate time and usable items to streach their benifits.

My personal thanks to all those who have served our country whether voluntarily or drafted. I enjoy freedom as a woman in California that you can probably get nowhere else in the world because of you.

God bless. Love you all.

I believe our veterans and servicepeople should have their own thread where they can share their own stories, reveal historical tidbits, and refect upon their service. They can even speak of the places they have been to give our civilian population a chance to see the value of this part of life. I feel this is so important and even shed some light on those who were wounded or even those who were POWS and MIAS. These folks should never be forgotten EVER!!!

Honestly, I think thy should have a whole section on the forum diverted to them. One for active members, one for gold star families, one for retired members and maybe a support forum!
