Free speech zones (also known as First Amendment Zones or derisively as Free speech cages) are areas in the United States that are set aside for political protesters to exercise their right to free speech. These came into existence soon after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks as part of George W. Bush's security campaign. It is alleged that they are sometimes used as censorship, to ensure that hostile views do not reflect negatively on presidential visits, press conferences, and speeches, or that they are used to insulate the president from hearing criticism. There is much controversy surrounding the creation of these areas - the mere existence of such zones is offensive to some people, and not a small amount of irony, considering that the U.S. Constitution defines the entire nation as a "free speech zone" and according to Bush as "the free-est country in the world".

the wiki article suggests such zones have been instituted on various occasions since 1988, but GWB didnt come into office until 1991

That's possible but I have never personally seen them actually used in the way Bush did, - and I would double check anything wiki says.

Even so, free speech is supposed to be everywhere.

Having a free speech zone that cages and contains people just seems like a tickler to "holding areas" for dissenters and even concentration camps.

Its freaking scary and unacceptable.

free speech isnt exactly supposed to be EVERYWHERE,, the constitution actually even qualifies 'assembly' as it pertains to 'peaceful'ness

you cant yell fire in a theater

you cant encite to riot,,,etc,,etc,,,

there are reasonable exceptions to most of the 'freedoms' we have,,,

Well I don't even consider yelling "fire" in a theater to be "free speech." But If there is a fire in a theater I doubt if it is against the law to yell "fire."

But my point is to create a "zone" that confines people who wear a t-shirt of an apposing candidate at a political rally is ridiculous, and a blatant violation of free speech.

The World is in Crisis and we are discussing the Word God being left out of a speech...

I cant't help wondering if this is the same God we were told would provide...just keep the faith....

When I say we I mean Catholics who were told to have lots of children and GOD will provide.

Flags and Religion.........abolish the lot

You Cannot Eat A Flag

How many kept the faith?

Secular or not, "Faith without works is dead".

Did you put that faith to the test or...

were you hoping someone else's faith

would invoke God to provide for YOU?
slaphead

I back up my statements with facts, news articles, events, etc.

Sometimes the truth is scary and ugly. But to imply that a Muslim would shoot you for saying that is pretty unsupported.

p.s.

And what is wrong with hating Zionism?

Its like hating dictatorships, communism, oppression, aggression, racism, war, ethnic cleansing, etc. etc.

truth is always subjective... your truth is not always everyone elses truth...

why do you think that muslim dominated countries, muslims make up 98% of the population? because other religions are not tolerated...look it up, i know you can google this...

I have never claimed otherwise. I don't care for the backwards religion of Islam.

I am just saying that to say that a Muslim would shoot you is really pretty much generalizing.

This is a test. It is only a test.

Had it been an actual emergency you would have been instructed where to turn your dial for furthers details of the emergency.....

This, after 9 pages of opinion, proves my point.

Religion, a PERSONAL belief system, can cause more harm than good in many cases. It has caused wars, inquistions, jihads, terror tactics, separation, isolation, mistrust, and the list goes on!

For something that "proclaims" and "teaches" tolerance and peace, it would seem the fault lies in the teachers or believers OWN definitions.

It is sad that people are involved because the "human" factor in any equation is "X" (unknown) and unpredictable.

I am a believer in science, rational thinking, self motivation and improvement. Debates on religion or religious beliefs are as unpredictable as a game of tic-tac-toe. You win or lose, momentarily, and usually by sheer luck or inattention of the other player.

I fault nobody for "faith or belief"! My parents were devout in theirs.... we disagreed, but I still loved them and they loved me, and it worked for them!

These "debates" on the subject show the personal attributes, the abilities to carry it to extreme in many cases.

Why can't we as a people exercize "tolerance and peace" to another with a different opinion other than our own? Do we consider ourselves "holier or more rightious" than another? Why?

Admit to extremism, bad judgement, bad teachers, false leaders, misinterpretation, and just downright self indulgence, live and let live, and you have something that works for all!

Or.....

Let's keep killing each other and just let the world go to hell in a hand basket, create choas and war, and enslave entire nations to improper thinking as we have since the beginning of religion itself!

No thank you! Love ya ALL, don't trust any of ya! laugh

laugh He's outtie, but not just for forgetting some people like to hear god mentioned in presidential speeches.

That is of course unless he declares war between now and then and cancels the elections....or puts all who disagree with him into FEMA camps pitchfork

There are a lot worse things to worry about him being re-elected than a god blunder!

We're headed towards despotism (kinda already there under this banker olegarchy) if he's re-elected....just look at the signs!

I fear for our souvernty!scared

seriously? in a country that loves Snooki and the Kardashians and where Twilight is the number one movie, and kids flock to see rihanna, and niki minaj, and reality tv is bombarded with foul mouthed women and men who indiscriminately lay down with anything that has two legs?

where we fight to have guns and take down the government for not being able to wear a t-shirt?

somehow I dont think GOD is a priority for americans, even though he certainly makes most of their 'important' lists...

somehow, I dont think they will even REMEMBER this next week, let alone feel a need to 'forgive' it.

Yeh what is the world coming to?

Kids these days don't respect anything or anyone including themselves.

College is too expensive, and drugs are too easy to get.

And I sound like my parents.

kids are learning from grown ups, who no longer want to actually be grown ups but stay kids forever (not all, but far too many and growing)

college IS too expensive considering the accompanying economy and job opportunities

drugs have always been easy to get, just less acceptible to use

And Im glad to sound like the two smartest people I know,,,laugh

Being an atheist, and my friends knowing it, I get little "goodies" from them from time to time.

I thought this one was kind of "spot on"! laugh

I liked this one.

This is one of the better e-mails I have received from them in a long time! I hope this amuses you as well.

THE LAW IS THE LAW

So "if" the US government determines that it is against the law for the words "under God" to be on our money, then, so be it.

And "if" that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a Law abiding US citizen.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that Smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.

I would like to think that those people have the American public's best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?

Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government (Federal, State and Local) and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life.

I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the" US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays." After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all it's just another day.

I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct."

In fact....

I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God....) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day....

What do you all think???? pitchfork
