You laugh, but I'm 100% serious here.

They get to vent AND they get the advice the needed/wanted.

win-win

I have been thinking about this for awhile. So a conversation with no advice between two guys goes like this....

...1st guy, " My girlfriend is driving me nutz."
2nd guy, " The green gate opens at midnight."
1st guy, " I am tired of her telling me to ________."
2nd guy, " I just got a new shirt."
1st guy, " I just wish she would stop nagging."
2nd guy, " I should water the lawn."
1st guy, " Now she wants me to fix the car."
2nd guy, " I heard it snowed in Uganda for the first time ever."

IDK, looks like two people walking side by side, ignoring each other. Is this considered conversation?

there are other options though, the person could just say 'uh huh' every few sentences, but some people would be offended by that too

or a person could show compassion with utterances like 'aw, im so sorry, thats terrible',,, but some people would be offended by that

or a person could just ask questions 'what are you gonna do?, where will you go? how do you feel?' but some would be offended by that to....

lol,, you gotta just be you, and if you are close enough friends to share things with, your friend should let you know their preference

if its a stranger,,oh well,, you didnt ask them to share it with you,,,

My favorite "advice" is to let them rant, then I finish it with:

"Well, it looks like you know what to do, guess I'm not needed..."

Is that an attempt to say they were wasting your time?

Not at all. Everyone who "rants" already knows what they want to do, some just require confirmation from another source.

It's a way of saying "the job is done". It get's them to make the choice sooner.

I always guess they don't like darts, horse shoes, corn hole, billiards, board games, etc. Sounds like a pretty boring person to me.

Why is that when you are talking to someone and just need someone to listen they offer you advice on how to make things better? I do not need strangers advice. If I want advice I will ask for it and unless I do SHUT-UP!

Then WHY are you talking at all? You Need someone to listen to you??? Seriously? Even your priest would chime in somewhere in your one sided discussion? if you reacted to it by telling him to SHUT UP....That would be wrong IMHO.

I don't know you but I hope you aren't one of them energy drainers.
A good listener consumes a whole bunch of energy... trying to fully understand you and the situation. You shouldn't be taking this for granted and besides, what is wrong with having different perspectives on things anyways?

They would get nothing from listening to you except a feeling of being unable to help the situation? Awesome!

I think everyone can understand at least a bit where the OP is coming from. I'm sure we've all received advice that we weren't looking for or didn't want to hear.

And I'm sure we've all given advice that the other person wasn't looking for or didn't want to hear.
