I couldn't honestly make an honest judgement on what the "best" band is, my taste changes so often in such dramatic ways, that I cannot really name one. But being a musician, I will say this... give me a good ol 2nd or 3rd wave ska band and it doesn't matter my mood or flavor of the month, I will GLADLY rock it.

About as much as the Beatles in their time, I think Nirvana changed mainstream music for my generation, from over the top metal hair bands of the eighties to more grunge, alternative, indie rock, which was a great change for my tastes. Mainstream took a turn for the worse after the nineties and you have to dig a bit deeper to find talent nowadays but it's out there Mainstream "rock" now in the US is NOT rock music imho. The UK still knows how to rock and has some good new bands that have been successful there

The best band ever is....... what do you think? Nonexistent! There is no best band - as there is no best food, or best painter, or best mountain or best creature. Every band has something unique to offer and on any given day any band could be the best for you at the time. I categorically reject categorization. I eschew superiority.
