Poe

The Raven

[First published in 1845]

horizontal space Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
`'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door -
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; -
This it is, and nothing more,'

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you' - here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!'
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
`Surely,' said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
'Tis the wind and nothing more!'

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door -
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
`Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,' I said, `art sure no craven.
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore -
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning - little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door -
Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as `Nevermore.'

But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before -
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `Nevermore.'

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
`Doubtless,' said I, `what it utters is its only stock and store,
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful disaster
Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore -
Till the dirges of his hope that melancholy burden bore
Of "Never-nevermore."'

But the raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore -
What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore
Meant in croaking `Nevermore.'

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining
On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamp-light gloated o'er,
But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o'er,
She shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
`Wretch,' I cried, `thy God hath lent thee - by these angels he has sent thee
Respite - respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore!
Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil! -
Whether tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted -
On this home by horror haunted - tell me truly, I implore -
Is there - is there balm in Gilead? - tell me - tell me, I implore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us - by that God we both adore -
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore -
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden, whom the angels name Lenore?'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting -
`Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!

You caught him in a lie and its also a crime to pose as a military person. I would cut him out of your life now as sounds like he may be a scammer or as someone said a player. With all the photoshop skills out there; it wouldn't be hard for him to fake this picture with your name on it. Get rid of him; unfriend him from Facebook, and you were smart to change your email.

you are acting naive time to go out and meet real people not these illusionists. dont let lonliness or fear rob you of a genuine life even if you must risk something by going out and actually meeting live people it is an upgrade from these sites...

Wow sorry that you got stung. Been there, done that, and it is no fun.

It really burns me when scammers use the guise of being in the military or even say the Secret Service to run a con on others.

A legitimate soldier (I use the generic term for all services) will have no problem showing you his Military ID relatively soon after you begin talking with any non-secured area that is easy to recognize in the background. It is a photo ID that will not compromise his military records or his private address but generally speaking if you as a civilian request to see it and he refuses move on. He is either a con artist or not in good standing with the military. Some are embarrassed mildly injured or just laid off services members that are trying to hang on to their glory days but little lies have consequences.

Military photos are everywhere and can be lifted with the click of a mouse so don't be impressed. Sometimes multiple photos in various uniforms and civilian gear since many post their off duty shots as well. Assuming the identity of a soldier is really one of the easiest.

Getting gear and a uniform and sewing on a name patch is pretty cheap and easy. They are sold in thrift stores and on line all over . Many other countries and even commercial soldiers pose as active duty and if you don't know what you are looking at it is hard to tell.

Most if not all military members also have current State ID's or driver's licenses of their home of record's address. A soldier that does not want to tell you there home of record if you have told them yours is fast dancing for a temporary relationship because he is bored or married. In a few rare cases he is keeping a girlfriend for a persona of not being seen as gay.

Last but not least, be fore you let some soldier in your britches or in your heart make him show you a Leave and Earning statement. It will tell you if he is the name rank and serial number he says he is and it will also tell you if he has any identified dependents as in A spouse or kids.

While this may seem like a bit of an invasion of privacy but legit soldiers know what games get played and make life tough for them and will make the effort to distinguish themselves.

Relatively fast they will introduce you to their Chaplain or even their Chain of Command or perhap's ask a wife of a member in their command to vouch for them. Usually it is at an event such as a unit party or ceremony but even if they are a long way away every post has a video center. I know because I have done it hundred's of times over the years. If a soldier is in good standing and you are even minimally courteous the first thing a military sister will do is encourage him to bring them into the fold and learn the life.

With Photoshop, you can do a lot of stuff; my college just printed an issue of their magazine with current photos and photos from a hundred years ago meshed together...seamlessly. I'd avoid him, anyone who lies about who they are can't be trusted.

There is a huge scam on Facebook where people are stealing military photos and making fake accounts. Look for the name on the uniform in their pics. The uniform is always last name. So if name on uniform says "Lance" that's his last name. So when he tells you his name is Lance Jones. There's your first red flag. Also look for broken English and how in depth his account is. Scammers, scammers everywhere!

Yeah; I get these guys claiming to be military too and I call them on it as I know a thing or two about serving in the military. I had to laugh when a guy had an American Sgt rank on his uniform and he said he was a General. laugh

Hahahahaha, that's hilarious!

@ PKH a real undercover special agent would never say he was one to someone he barely knows, esp not via email or chat.
I agree with the rest: dump him asap!
Sorry you had a bad experience, never nice, to say the least.

How did you not boot him into touch the 1st time? No disrespect, but if you keep, forgiving him and then he spins you another yarn, can you not just tell him to f**k off? He's a Walter Mitty and you deserve better. Don't take anyone at face value until you see concrete proof? It would've been him that hacked into your computer also! Drop this idiot like a lead balloon?

I had guy's in the past, who contacted me with no profile pic, and they were quick to want to my e-mail address, after only one day. I would ask why they had no pic, and so came the excuse's "Because my family and friends are on here"-Sounds like he felt too ashamed to show his face. That's only one example of many. If a guy with no pic tries to flirt, I quickly tell him, that if he expects to meet me, I'm gonna need to see his pic anyway, otherwise how will I recognize him in a public place? Unless he wanted to meet me at my house, and I answer the door, and he tells me he's him from Mingle2, or else I won't know what he looks like. laugh And btw, I'm putting some updated profile pics up really soon, before I make myself look like some hypocrite for not having any of myself.
