Topic: Should we build slave labour camps? | |
---|---|
Apparently our prisons are over crowded. I guess people are not too fussed about going to prison anymore then. So I was thinking that maybe we should do what the Russians did by sending them all to a place far away like Siberia. That way they won't be a burden on the tax payer because they will be made to work for their grub etc.

I think let the punishment fit the crime would be a better place to start
for instance,, in 2010 47 percent of inmates were in for violent offenses that's where they should be , with each other, away from the public that they could physically harm and subject to the same fear of harm that they placed upon their victim 16.7 were in for property offenses a waste of money, this is the type of crime that should have a labor punishment to pay back the value of the property destroyed or taken 13.4 were for public order another waste of money, again the type of crime that should have a community service punishment to amend for the disturbance to the community 21.7 were drug related another waste of money, if people bother other peoples property or safety or 'peace' , there should be a consequence but those who use drugs take the consequence upon themselves unless they cross over into one of the other CRIMES above a rehabilitation would be more productive than an incarceration |

Some good points you make there missharmony but I'd like to make a small point about the one on drugs if that's alright. Rehabilitating them is not a good idea as far as I'm concerned. Too many go back to taking drugs again. So it's a waste of energy and money. I got a better idea; these people obviously don't care about their well being, so why not use them as ginnie pigs? I bet scientists are getting fed up with working on rats all day long. Medicine would advance much quicker using human subjects.

borders too much on inhumane treatment to me,,,
I have known those that cleaned up from drugs and worse, and wouldn't agree with putting their lives at further unnecessary risk,,, |

Well,Sunshine, you probably are too young to remember, but one should think even you have heard about the horrendous Medical Tests and Experiments performed on Human Beings,so I think your suggestion to do just that is a bit sick! ![]() ![]() |

We already have slave labor camps. They're called "Corporations", and our education system is the court that sentences them |

So another little member of the entitlement crowd that believes they have a right to dictate the fate of another. I believe that all the little brains that believe they are entitled should be required to take a test on rights and if they can't pass, we use them as guinea pigs. And you would be welcome to all the "medicine" modern pharma could pump into you. Or we could just start easy and use Tylenoyl and grapefruit juice in increasing doses, but sorry all the dialysis machines are spoken for. |

Entitlements to anothers' property does not extend to entitlements to curtail anothers' rights. In fact the first entitlement should be curtailed as soon as possible if not sooner, but I guess in due course, |

Incarceration for nonviolent offenses is both an unnecessary financial drain and a stigmata that proliferates the recidivism rates. Jails and prisons are not reformatories, they are crime colleges. The statutes and sentencing guidelines need reviewed and revised where appropriate. To the originator of this topic: Why would it be necessary to build "slave labour camps"? Prisons already exist and they are overflowing with available manpower. But what are they to do? Build pyramids? One other thing bears consideration. If you build a substantial industry centered on the use of slave labor you become heavily invested in the existence of crime in order to maintain your labor force. One reason the south opposed abolition is because of heavy investment in slave labor centered industries. Ending slavery meant being forced to pay wages or buy and maintain machinery. And tractors don't breed. They went to war to defend their livelihood. Doesn't it stand to reason that a state with the power to determine what constitutes a criminal act and force its will on the people would exert equal determination in preserving their profit making? Maybe you get the knock on your door one morning and are taken to the labor camp because you haven't paid your parking fines and a worker is needed on the assembly line. Just as hiring more and more police officers, this does nothing to reduce crime. In fact, it encourages proliferation. |

I kinda like some of the foreign punishments. You steal, you lose a hand, then another, next a foot. Keeps the crime rate nice and low when the punishment isn't actually worth the crime. Why do you think we get all the foreign criminal element here? Because our prisons and justice system is a joke to them, more like a career opportunity, and better than what most of them live with daily! Gitmo, Abu Ghraib and those like them being the exceptions..... they don't want to face those kinds of charges. Funny that if you steal from the govt, or act in any way against it, you get Gitmo, but mess with the people and you get 3 hots, a cot, color TV, a gym, internet, library, plus free medical and dental.... early retirement Unless your caught in Texas or Arizona! ![]() Go figure..... |

I may finally agree with you. Incarceration for nonviolent offenses is both an unnecessary financial drain and a stigmata that proliferates the recidivism rates. Jails and prisons are not reformatories, they are crime colleges. The statutes and sentencing guidelines need reviewed and revised where appropriate. And just what would you be agreeing with? That it is ok to violate anothers' rights so long as the violator feels they are entitled. Or is it ok to violate those rights if the violation is only a short period of slavery? Or is it that you little understand what a right is? To the originator of this topic: Why would it be necessary to build "slave labour camps"? Prisons already exist and they are overflowing with available manpower. But what are they to do? Build pyramids? One other thing bears consideration. If you build a substantial industry centered on the use of slave labor you become heavily invested in the existence of crime in order to maintain your labor force. Maybe you get the knock on your door one morning and are taken to the labor camp because you haven't paid your parking fines and a worker is needed on the assembly line. Just as hiring more and more police officers, this does nothing to reduce crime. In fact, it encourages proliferation. First, your understanding of the South and abolition is flawed. The issue of slavery had already been resolved and was in the process of ending. Slavery was not the issue of the Civil War. Otherwise you seem to understand the issue and the violation of rights, so how can you make the statement in the first section? |

And another post that is just talking in circles with no real meaning. Someone is going to be "made" to do something but not to waste that precious "taxpayer" money. So just "who" is to "make" someone do it, the taxpayer so long as it isn't more than necessary. So we're back to some entitlement so long as the taxpayer isn't robbed of too much. So if someone steals something worth $50 from you, it's would be ok to rob the taxpayer of thousands of dollars to "make" someone replace it. |

Now that is justice. First, there was harm. Second, they understood the remedy and the penalty. Third, justice was served. Fourth, the taxpayer didn't pay for anything it wasn't paying for anyway, the magistrate. |
