I was in South America some years ago with a group of friends and one of us was asked by a local "Where are you from." The member of our group responded "We're Americans". The local replied, "What the hell do you think we are?"

They're South Americans. The USA has the distinction of being referred to as its continent by name. All the other countries are referred to by their actual name rather than their continent. This is how it evolved.

I'm sure they'll get over it. All around the world, this is how it has been understood. USA also covers a large expanse of North America, therefore, it is referred to as its own continent.

Please don't count this Proud Canadian as American...  OP got it right.. and thank God some "Americans" do. I live in BC Canada and that makes me American..or a landed immigrant or illegal alien..or some are draft dodger. US citizens may be referred to as "Americans" from the the Americas. well guess who else makes up part of the New World. (Western Hem) She said American not "American" Should she have to say Notth American? We are just Canada of American As Sir John A MacDonald stated; Canadian First Prime Minister: "A British subject I was born and a British subject I shall die" Hey I should run for PM..OH yeah I can't even vote or work directly for the gov. You are referred to as your country name rather than your continent, just like the South and Central Americans. If we were referred to by our country name, what would it be? The Uniteds? Plus, the continent is included in our name, therefore, it stuck.
