British cosmologist Stephen Hawking has launched the biggest-ever search for intelligent extraterrestrial life in a 10-year, $135 million project to scan the heavens. Australia will play a crucial role in the project, with the Parkes Observatory in New South Wales signing a multi-million-dollar contract to scan radio waves for life in the cosmos. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-07-21/hawking-launches-biggest-ever-search-for-alien-life/6635296 "It's a huge gamble, of course, but the pay-off would be so colossal ... even if the chance of success is small," the astrophysicist said. [that's Professor Matthew Bailes, from Melbourne's Swinburne University, project lead] The possibility of finding life had however effectively risen a billionfold through the identification of billions of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way. "Is there life out there? We may not answer it but this gives a bigger chance that it may be answered in our lifetime," he said. The program will be 50 times more sensitive than previous searches, and cover 10 times more of the sky, experts said. It will scan at least five times more of the radio spectrum, and 100 times faster, while in tandem undertake the deepest and broadest-ever search for optical laser transmissions. The initiative was launched on the 46th anniversary of the first manned Moon landing. It is allied with the Breakthrough Message project, an international competition to create digital messages that represent humanity. As usual the Brits have got it right. |

Where is all the money coming from? Hawking isn't worth that much. The link, already posted; repeat: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-07-21/hawking-launches-biggest-ever-search-for-alien-life/6635296 yep, it's a Roosi funding Hawking's last statement. When will the ventriloquist finally reveal himself ? Man, with the deafening sound of your car.. don't know how..it's asif u don't know, this side of the planet sleeps when your side is all lit up.. "01010100 01100001 01101011 01100101 Hi Tulip, there's a positive to this project as it scans only for signals; no transmissions. Not until Islam joins the mainstream. Who want's alien intelligence to leverage Iran & take over. Those Brits, they adore Mother Queen. Thinking over, unless humanity takes over a couple of planets in the nearest solar system, the closest of which i understand is 4.5 light years away; transmitting signals - for aliens to home-in is obviously risky. Looks more like a scout / defensive quest. Assuming there's an intelligence ahead of us and if so; imagine the horror among NYC gays when the aliens beam in. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I just hope they share any results with the rest of the world.

I just hope they share any results with the rest of the world. Why not? It's a Scan & Listen program - at 3 locations 1. Parkes Observatory radio telescope in Australia 2. National Radio Astronomy Observatory dish in West Virginia 3. Automated Planet Finder Telescope at Lick Observatory in California The project manager is a Professor at Swinburne University, Melbourne Mr. Hawking's the Program Director. Former astronauts from NASA (retired, i suppose) are involved. In 2010, Mr. Hawking reportedly said: "Aliens may not be friendly", which puts a spin to this program and the fact that it is a Russian, Yuri Milner, an investor in firms like Flipkart, Ola..; who has pledged $100 million to buy listening time from these Observatories. that adds to the spin. |

Stephen Hawking.... quoted
![]() 8:39AM BST 25 Apr 2010 Stephen Hawking has suggested that aliens almost certainly exist but has warned humanity not to try to contact them. One of the world's leading scientists makes the claim in a new television documentary series, beginning on the Discovery Channel next month. Hawking says that in a universe with 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of millions of stars, it is unlikely that earth is the only place where life has evolved. "To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational," he said, according to The Sunday Times. "The real challenge is working out what aliens might actually be like." Hawking says that they could be microbes – basic animals such as worms which have been on Earth for millions of years, but suggests that extraterrestrial life could develop much further. "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet," Hawking said. "I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach." The scientist, who is paralysed by motor neurone disease, warned that contact with alien life could spell disaster for the human race. "If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the American Indians." ![]() http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/space/7631252/Stephen-Hawking-alien-life-is-out-there-scientist-warns.html/ |

"The real challenge is working out what aliens might actually be like." Suppose they look like us, think like us; after all we are now talking about a billion earth like planets... the only difference being they are 100 year old guys with 30 year old bodies, traveling light year distances would require that then..? "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet," Hawking said. In translation, what Mr. Hawking is saying is that dating such a person would be unpatriotic. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach." If they can get through the asteroid belt, we are chicken anyway. |

That quote & link I posted is from 5 yrs ago.... my point being, around that time, in 2010, he CHANGED his mind. And it started a scientific exploration & contact controversy. He REGETS his prior statements & that we ever sent signals out there. "If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the American Indians " ![]() You can Google it all. He also said, " We would be as insignificant as ants to them " |
