I if you have a relationship with a single mother, you could be legally responsible for child support payments. If she is on Public Support, the Government could force YOU to pay. This is the Government "seeing you" as a father figure.
* I guess The Government is now in our bedrooms.
* Just wondering what your thoughts are ...

NOt in Alaska...
IF your name isn't on the Birth Certificate you aren't liable for anything in this state.

I do know it is that way in Canada...
Way too many Canuck friend.

What are my thoughts on this.. It is wrong
The absentee parent should be paying support
No if and or buts.

If I lived in Canada, and was interested in a single parent I would have to be a bit leery. If I was in love with him,I would consult an attorney to find out how I could protect my assets til we were married that doesn't mean I wouldn't do it. My EX has children that I am still great friends with today. They call to chat or ask advice etc...

This ⤴

perhaps the government isn't in your bedroom, but follows you to the door.....just to make sure you're not a worthless prick at the expense of a mother & her children  just another way of viewing it.

Personally I think if you are going to live with a parent then you should have to marry them right along with the parent. And at that point when you have the privilege of having a child in your home you should have the responsibility. I don't care if they have a biological parent or not.

I if you have a relationship with a single mother, you could be legally responsible for child support payments.

Not overnight.
There aren't government auditors in the bushes outside of the homes of single mothers waiting to ambush poor smucks with a child support payment schedule as they're performing a walk of shame.

I think it's kinda like common law marriage or assumed tenants rights when someone lives with you but you then decide to kick them out overnight and the government says "no, even though they aren't on the lease, they resided there for a certain amount of time, and their mail is addressed there, so they have tenants rights, you have to give them 30 days notice before kicking them out unless you can show you're in danger."

If a woman can show that you have a relationship with the kid, have assumed responsibility, financial, personal, whatever, over a legally (not your opinion) significant amount of time, then they "may" be able to go after you for child support payments.

You can't spend months, years, decades, paying for the kids braces, and food, and private school, significantly impacting the kids life, then the next day disappear and say "not my kid!"

You can be responsible for all sorts of things if someone can prove that you've chosen to take responsibility for it, even if it's tenuous or intangible.
Like oral agreements.

I mean if you find a dog on the street, take it home, feed it, play with it, call it your dog, put it in family photos, then the dog rips the face off a toddler you can't just tell the cops "not my dog! I just found it in the alley a few months ago!" and expect to get away with it.

But there's a huge gap between what the government "can" (theoretically) do, and what they've actually been able to do.
You won't find very many examples of successful lawsuits for child support from ex dates.
They really have to prove you have a father relationship to the kid.

This is the Government "seeing you" as a father figure.

This is the mother and/or kid seeing you as a father figure and the court agreeing with them, all based on evidence of your behavior towards them.

If you want to avoid this, then either avoid single parents like the plague (which gets even harder to do as you get older and single), or don't meet the kid, don't form a relationship with the kid until you've seriously developed one with the mother, don't pay the kids bills, don't take the kid places, don't form a significant relationship with the kid, unless you are actually willing to take the entire responsibility of what you're doing.
As they're so fond of saying they're "a package deal."

As the forum states " dating ", not moving in or marriage.
Just a nice relationship and dating with her.

The government doesn't care what you call it, or what you consider it, or how you define it, or what label you use, only how your behavior fits into their legal definitions.
You don't have to be married or living together to act like a father.

* I guess The Government is now in our bedrooms.

When hasn't it been?
Sodomy was against the law.
Gay was against the law.
Gay men can now marry, but two straight roommates, or brothers that live together that want some tax advantages and cheaper insurance, can't.
Prostitution is illegal in some forms, but legal in other ways.
Rape is prosecuted.
18 is legal to have sex with, 17 isn't.
Mentally handicapped can be forced sterilized.
You can't remove mattress tags.
Government is all over your "bedroom" in all sorts of ways and always has been.

* Just wondering what your thoughts are

I can't really tell if this is a thread of:
- "Government shouldn't have this power!"
- "Single parents suck!"
- or some combination.

Either way, I agree.

most states don't give a sheet if you are dating or sleeping together
and if you decide to co-habitat together
then yes the spouse could take you to court to have the child support case re-evaluated

why? because the income in that home may have changed now this might only be if you marry her

I do not think it is fair that a single Mom should be footing the bill, all by herself. The deadbeat Dad should share in the cost too. By the same token, a single Dad should not be footing the bill all by himself, the deadbeat Mom should be contributing . I have yet to hear of a case where that is happening. Where is the equality factor now? That is why, when it comes to dating, I prefer woman with grown kids, so there are no hassles involved...just saying...

I dont know where you are from but actually that happens quite a bit
depending on how the joint custody is figured out and the income levels of both parties..it can be split right down the middle

I find most single mum's and dad's are anything but deadbeats.

Uh, which government? The Canadian government?

What is true in one nation isn't necessarily true elsewhere.
