Migrants stage protests along Greek-Macedonian border

IDOMENI, Greece (AP) — Iraqi and Syrian migrants and asylum-seekers are protesting peacefully on the Greek side of the Greek-Macedonian border since early Saturday, demanding admission into Macedonia.

Macedonia has effectively shut down the border to all migrants since late Thursday night, when about 50 people were allowed thorugh. Migrant flow along the so-called "Balkan route", through Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, had slowed to a trickle before that.

About 150 people are currently close to the fence marking the border, carrying placards reading "Open the border" and shouting the same slogan. Earlier Saturday, about 300 staged a similar protest.

About 5,500 migrants are braving rainy weather at a tent camp close to the border and another 500 are camped at a gas station 17 kilometers away.

EU rift over refugees grows as Greece rebuffs Austrian visit

Tensions over the handling of Europe’s refugee crisis escalated as Greece denied an Austrian request for talks and the European Union’s top immigration official warned the deepening discord risks disaster.

Political divisions are widening ahead of an extraordinary summit of the EU’s 28 leaders on March 7 called to take stock of efforts to secure the bloc’s external frontiers and mitigate the influx of migrants. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is defending her open-border policy in three regional elections in March, issued a rebuke.

“Developments over the last few days show that we need a European approach to solve the issue of the refugees and the security of the outer borders,” she said Friday at a news conference in Munich. “Our starting point needs to be to fight the causes of flight.”

Greek officials have denounced a group led by Austria for stopping refugee transit at the border with Macedonia, warning of a humanitarian crisis if refugees are bottled up and prevented from heading north. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ government recalled the Greek ambassador to Vienna on Thursday.

“I offered to the Greek interior minister to come directly to Athens to explain the Austrian position,” Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner said in an interview with ORF radio on Friday. “But meanwhile, the ambassador has gone back to Athens for consultations. I understand that Greece wants to hold talks another time.”

A Greek Foreign Ministry official, who asked not to be named in line with policy, said the Greek government had turned down Mikl-Leitner’s request for a meeting.

Greece views itself as a transit country and, while seeking to keep its borders open, “it is clear we must prepare for all eventualities,” Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragasakis said at the Delphi Economic Forum in central Greece.

While German data show a decline in arrivals this winter, Peter Schoof, the country’s ambassador to Greece, told the conference there’s no quick fix and “curbing migration cannot happen through the closure of borders.”

Hungary’s government said it’s pressing ahead with plans for a national referendum aimed at blocking an EU plan to redistribute refugees among the 28 countries. “This is about the EU taking power away by stealth,” Justice Minister Laszlo Trocsanyi said. “We feel that the defense of a national constitution is an important thing.”

With EU states divided over policy at their borders, European Commissioner for Immigration Dimitris Avramopoulos, who is Greek, warned that the union was heading for “disaster” if no consensus among members is reached by March 7. Europe must “put an end to unilateral, bilateral and trilateral” actions, Avramopoulos at the Delphi conference.

Ioannis Mouzalas, Greek minister for migration, threatened “unilateral actions” to defend Greece’s corner, telling reporters in Brussels on Thursday that Greece was not prepared to become “a warehouse for souls.”

Mouzalas was asked by Mikl-Leitner to convey her request for a meeting, according to a separate Greek government official who asked not to be named because the talks were private. He told her that he’d pass on her message but said that a meeting would be difficult while the borders are shut, the official said.

There is NO WAY, this will end peacefully today, this week or this year. Most migrants enter Europe through Greece. And Greece can not possibly take in any more.

Prayers to Greece

Will the catholic church enter the melee and unite the countries that are having the refugee problems? Could this be the precursor to the Great Tribulation?

Europe, owes the welfare seekers/migrants, nothing.
Assimilate into the culture and society of the host country, or go home.

True, bad house guests. Part of the problem, they don't except they are guests.

Greece had a migrant crisis, LONG before the world was talking about it. ( For years!) Now.. There is no room or money or tolerance or social workers, or enough volunteers, or making excuses or patience left.

It is going to get real ugly now in MANY countries. Enough is enough.

I asked you: where is a problem? Way, the refuges leave there country, city, home and moved in Europe.
I think because in Syria have a war and our country trade the weapons and bullets in this country and bought oil for a little money. We have need to see this problem in eyes of the our liders .

There's only one thing that's certain:

none of it is as simple as most people want to pretend it is.

It's not JUST because Muslims kill each other, it's not JUST that Syria has been interfered with by a bunch of other countries, it's not JUST that Putin has been playing both sides, while mostly helping Assad, and it's especially not as simple as "telling the refugees to go home."

Get as self-righteous as you want, you'll be ignoring at least half of the factors and problems, and doing the equivalent of squeezing a balloon in the middle, and expecting the ends not to bulge.

----------------------------------------------------

The factors of the problem? It is too late for all the reasons why?
And it wouldn't solve anything.

This is a crisis situation, for at least 10 countries. All those countries having open boarders was their first mistake & now closing them should be their first solution.
Some already have. Some refused to take the amount Merkel kept asking. Some put up strick policies (like Australia). More and more are fighting back. This is inevitable.

How many people can you fit in your house? How many can you afford & care for? How many house guests will you let get away with violent crimes against your family? How many would you change your life, culture, religion & laws for?

And when you say 'enough is enough, I can't let anymore in'..& they come to your doorstep anyway & scream at you... 'Let us in! Or ' If you don't let me have my way it is because your a racist!'
Does their showing up & being demanding change your situation? ..NO
What are you going to do?
Forsake your wife & kids, your future, your life.. Just to say, ' I'm a humanitarian ' or ' I don't want people to think I am mean person' or I feel guilty, my life is better ? ' or 'everybody else is doing it, I want to be one of the cool kids too ' or ' 'This is what my party wants, so I have to'? NO. Is saying 'no' selfish? NO

Are they all Syrian? NO
Are they families? NO
Did Arab/ Muslim countries take there own people? NO
Are they mostly men under 45, who left their own countries & family for a new life with free sh@t & less restrictions, who believe they should breed & make the world Islamic by any means necessary ? YES . Is that selfish? YES

This is not a matter of being self righteous. It is a matter of survival for each citizen & for each country & for Europe itself & soon..very soon..the world.

Bible prophesy is that ten countries will unite and form an uneasy alliance with the Catholic Church. They will become a world power. This looks to me like it could have the potential to start the ball rolling.

I know a lot more European history than you, obviously, since your information is so wrong.

They DID try to overrun Europe, over five centuries ago. Of course, Europe had, for a thousand years before THAT, been trying to overrun and rule THEIR homelands, so it's more or less understandable.

However, after the initial waves were driven back to Turkey in the east, and to North Africa in the west, that all ended for a very long time.

Until, of course, the Europeans AGAIN decided that they needed to rule over the Arabs and the other inhabitants of the ME, and they marched in and declared colonial ownership of Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, the rest of Africa, and so on.

Then after THAT, came the wars to drive the Europeans BACK out AGAIN.

So. No YOU go back and study some history which isn't biased against the people you dislike, and try again.
