http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/dec/21/death-penalty-falls-to-new-low-as-voters-seek-resu/

Use of the death penalty in the United States fell to a historic low in 2016, even as voters in three states passed ballot initiatives in support of capital punishment, according to a year-end report from the Death Penalty Information Center.

Thirty death sentences are expected to be imposed by the end of the year — a 39 percent decrease from 2015 — marking the lowest number of executions in a single year since 1972, the beginning of a four-year moratorium on capital punishment.

The U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed its legality in 1976.

The 20 executions carried out in five states in 2016 represent the lowest number in a single year since 1991, when 14 inmates were put to death, according to the report. Executions peaked in 1999, when 98 felons were put to death.

I prefer the

"Lets keep them dropping" slogan

you are convicted of a horrendous crime and sentenced to death by our laws... so be it.. good bye.

to each their own

though everyone must die, I find taking of human life , with the exception of immediate self defense, to be pointless and only serving a purpose of vengeance,,,

that's right... and most everyone on death row has been convicted of doing just that, taking of a human(or humans) life ( that's how you get there) and for the vast majority it is not the first time they have been convicted of very serious crimes, including prior murders. And usually it is premeditated murder.

Do these people not know the ramifications of murder before the commit it. Hmmm.

So some will get the pen pal thing going and try to help these animals " correct" what can't be corrected and others ( like me) will say "good riddance.. hope you do better on the other side".

I have long been ambivalent about the death penalty.
For: 'An eye for an eye.'
Against: If ALL life were considered sacred, perhaps
there would be less taking of it by evil forces in
the first place.

So I really canna add anything here.

As I watched the news last night a story of road rage was on. In Louisiana, A woman ( Grandmother) was driving too slow for the guy in back of her. He beeped at her.. she beeped back. He cut her off, got out of his car and shot her 3 year old grandson who was in the car seat in the back.. to death.

Lets ask the Grandmother her thoughts on the death penalty

Ya and indeed that is why tis determined by factions
unassociated with the crime, to remove knee-jerk
reactions of hate and loathing that are automatic in
most people who would never consider the same crime.

It is sort of like government, not perfect but what
(else) can you do.

In Texas we have a nice lineup scheduled through June 2017. Nine murderers convicted and sentenced by their fellow citizens of the state of Texas. They will not kill again and the state will save around
$80,000./year per inmate.

Hopefully that's in response to the need for it.

I mean when I think death penalty I think of people like Ed Gein, and Beverly Arlitt, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer.
Some people need killing.

And I wonder if the good ol' serial killing flesh eating psychopath has just been replaced by "terrorist!" or "mass shooter!" or "spree killers!"
Which tend to be killed by the police or self inflicted gunshots making the death penalty moot.

i am not an avid death sentence supporter but am not avidly against it neither

if evidence is overwhelming (excluding eye witnesses[which have proven mostly unreliable] is overwhelming then yes i see the benefit (but must be speedily done like within 2 years max)

but if it is just barely a conviction because jury is not brightest per say then no

and if prosecution wants to go for death penalty ALL emotions pulling tricks must be banned ---- no pictures of the victim unless the accused is in said picture committing a crime

pulling on the emotions of the jury should be totally a contemptuous act an accused person is to be tried on facts not emotions

-------------------------------------------------------

and off base just a little bit

anyone committing any crime on the property they have no right being on should not be able to sue the property owner for anything

Let's put it in perspective. In Texas...who doesn't know Texas is a capital punishment state? Hell my friend ( over 20 yrs) lives in England and thought we still hang em high in the street. Old west btw. But if someone is dumb enough to do that here...they know the consequences. Hell other countries you might get caned for petty crap.don't freaking murder others

Maybe those opposed should step up. Let them get released and stay at your house.

imo public punishment should be brought back along with the road gangs

heck some people commit crimes to get 3 hots & cot we need to make prison a punishment again

not club pen

having someone that is potentially dangerous stay with my kids is stupid

having someone that is potentically a danger kept from society in a facility DESIGNED to maintain and keep watch over them is not

that is true

maybe those against the death penalty should just have to pay more of
the cost to house feed and guard them

The only reason it's gone down is because there are too many appeals processes taking place. In turn using extra tax money, not to mention the cost of housing such inmates.

Sorry, I'm heavily in favor of capital punishment. You take a life, you deserve your death.

if only costs were directly billed that way

those supporting war could pay more to military
those supporting scientific research could pay more for all the studies
etc,,,etc,,etc,,

but we know the pot is a collective that is collected from people regardless of which issues they do or do not support
